Graham was 19-22 in his last year for the Saints, money from 40 yards or less, a little over half from beyond. Seems similar to Sushi in that regard. He did make a 50 yarder, but also missed an XP during the season.

It's a big blow to the Steelers, who lose a kicker that has gone 87-of-95 (91.5 percent) over the last three seasons

Don't know much about Cundiff personally, other than that miss in the playoffs a couple of years ago. But that only happened because the cheating chowderhead bastards were dicking around with the scoreboard, his coach didn't have the awareness to call a timeout and his FG attempt was rushed as a result. Not really his fault, IMO.

TD's & Beer

Among the kickers the Steelers will consider are veterans Billy Cundiff, Shayne Graham, Jay Feely, Garrett Hartley and Alex Henery

Suisham, the most accurate field-goal kicker in team history, was injured on the opening kickoff of the second half

Suisham has a torn anterior cruciate ligament and cartilage damage

Whomever they sign will also have to kick off because neither of the two punters on the roster, Brad Wing or Jordan Berry, have kickoff experience.

Cundiff and Hartley spent time with the Cleveland Browns last season. Graham, 37, has been with 14 NFL teams in one form or another, including the Steelers for one game in 2013 after Suisham had a hamstring injury. Suisham recovered enough to play and Graham was released the following week without being active.

Feely, 39, has been with seven teams, including the Chicago Bears last season.

The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Henery in the fourth round in 2011 and cut him last August. The Detroit Lions signed him in September, but when he missed three field goals in a loss to Buffalo Oct. 5, they cut him the next day.

Here's a list of some available free agents that could fill the role:

- Shayne Graham: The 37-year-old Graham has played in every type of climate imaginable, including Buffalo, New England, Cincinnati, Houston, Baltimore, and New York. Last season, Graham played with the Saints, connecting on 19 of his 22 field goal attempts. A Pro Bowler in 2005, Graham's longest stay with any team was the Bengals, which he played with from 2003-09. An 85.5 percent field goal kicker for his career, Graham made all 12 of his field goal attempts in 2010 while hitting on 31 of his 34 attempts in 2007.

- Jay Feely: A 14-year veteran, the 39-year-old Feely has played on six different teams throughout his career. He played in just four games last season with the Bears, connecting on three of his four field goal attempts and hitting five of his six extra point attempts. He connected on 30 of his 36 attempts (83.3 percent) with the Cardinals in 2013 and hit on 25 of his 28 attempts (89.3 percent) in Arizona in 2012. For his career, Feely has connected on 82.6 percent of his kicks while making 99.3 percent of his extra point attempts.

-Garrett Hartley: The 29-year-old Hartley spent his first six NFL seasons with the Saints before spending last season with the Browns. Hartley kicked in just two games last season, hitting on all three of his field goal attempts. He struggled during his last season with the Saints, converting a career low 73.3 percent (22-of-30) of his field goal attempts. After missing the 2011 season, Hartley connected on 18 of his 22 field goal attempts in 2012, and during his rookie season, he connected on all 13 of his field goal attempts. For his career, Hartley is an 81.7 percent field goal kicker.

- Andrew Furney: Last season, the 24-year-old Furney did not attempt a field goal during his rookie season with the Jets. In college, Furney connected on 47 of 61 field goal attempts for a success rate of 77 percent. He best season came as a sophomore in 2011, when Furney hit on 14 of his 16 field goal attempts for Washington State. Furney did boot a 51-yard, game-winning field goal late in a preseason game last season against the Colts.

- Matt Wile: Recently waived by Carolina after being signed by the Panthers as a rookie free agent, Wile spent four seasons kicking collegiately at the University of Michigan. His senior season, Wile converted on 15 of his 21 field goal attempts (71.4 percent) and was 20-29 for his career with the Wolverines.

- Jerimiah Detmer: A recent graduate of the University of Toledo, Detmer connected on 84.4 percent (65-of-77) of his field goal attempts with the Rockets. His best season came in 2013, when Detmer converted on 19 of 20 of his field goal tries. Deter struggled a bit on extra points, missing two PTAs in 2014 and three in 2012. Detmer should be used to kicking in adverse weather conditions, as Toledo's Glass Bowl, like Heinz Field, is known for its adverse winds and cold weather come late fall.

- Derek Dimke: This free agent last played football in 2011, at the University of Illinois. In college, Dimke connected on 84.8 percent of his field goal attempts. Dimke converted on 10 of his 12 field goal attempts as a senior and hit on 24 of his 29 field goal tries (82.8 percent) in 2010.

- Taylor Pontius: Waived by the Colts back in June, the rookie free agent converted on 11 of his 14 field goal attempts in 2014 while at the University of North Alabama. His claim to fame was booting a 54-yard field goal as time expired to edge Valdosta State, 31-29.

The teams that released him didn't like something. Perhaps his trajectory isn't consistently where teams would like it. I am referring to clearing the D-line or maybe his hangtime is short. Waters was 8 out of 12(66.7%) on FGs for his NFL career(pre-season). One of them being blocked.

Steelers Must Look Past Today For PK

Aug 11, 2015
Jim Wexell
Publisher SteelCityInsider.net

The Steelers are hosting a competition today to replace Shaun Suisham but better PKs should come available. Here are the top contenders:

LATROBE -- With Shaun Suisham out for the year with a torn ACL, the Pittsburgh Steelers will bring Alex Henery and a handful of other unemployed veterans in for a kicking competition at St. Vincent College today.

The Steelers will no doubt sign one from the group, but the more important kickers to watch are currently in other camps.

There are at least four competitions currently being waged that should draw the Steelers' attention this preseason:

* In Oakland, 37-year-old Sebastian Janikowski is being pushed by Cal's Giorgio Tavecchio, who's been with four teams the last four preseasons. Even though Janikowski made 86 percent of his attempts last year, he could lose his job because he's due to make $3.3 million this season.

* In Jacksonville, 33-year-old Josh Scobee is being pushed by jason myers, an Arena League kicker out of Marist. Scobee made 77 percent of his kicks last season but is due to make $3.4 million this season.

* Tennessee Titans kicker Ryan Succop has a virtual lock on his job after making 86 percent of his field-goal attempts last season. But team observers are high on first-year kicker Mike Meyer out of Iowa. As a four-year starter in college, Meyer converted 61 of 80 career field goals, including 19 of 21 in the fourth quarter and overtime. Meyer made a pair of 50-plus-yarders this past weekend at a team stadium scrimmage.

* What might be the best camp competition of all involves two kickers whom the Denver Broncos used last season, and by the end of the year had both. But the Broncos are expected to keep only one coming out of camp, either Connor Barth , who made 15 of 16 field goals last season, or Temple's Brandon McManus, who made 9 of 13 field goals and has the stronger leg.

Unless that video is a hoax, I think he can hit the broad side of a barn. Hell, he put the ball into a damn basketball hoop. He has he leg and accuracy, trajectory (like someone mentioned above) would be only issue I could think of as to why he is not signed.

But, i you're scraping the bottom of the barrel, why not give the guy a shot.

Good stuff. :applaudit: My feeling from the start of this (suisham's injury) has been that the kicker we start the season with wont be on the roster until after the last cuts around the league are in.

Big downgrade in the kicking game. Not a lot of good options though

I remember that game. The announcers jinxed him - "Anderson hasn't missed ALL YEAR!"

Yep. I remember thinking: "Uh oh..."

I'd attribute that more to Randle Cunningham's shitty second half performance.

Ray Finkle agrees. :wink02:

Joking aside, you are correct: the game "shouldn't" have come down to a FG, but it did indeed come down to that FG... which Anderson missed.

The defense giving up 30 points and allowing the game-tying TD drive after the miss didn't help either

The cheating chowderhead bastards....OMG you gotta love it!!!!!! :applaudit:

I hope the Steelers are paying attention:

Broncos kickers hit 70- and 65-yard field goals in practice

Clearly, the kicking battle in Denver is properly inflated.

Brandon McManus and Connor Barth are engaged in a high-altitude duel for the job, and both showed they were good from distance in today’s practice.

According to Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com, the two took turns booming field goals at the end of practice.

McManus hit a 70-yarder, which was followed minutes later by Barth’s 65-yarder.

McManus’ kick apparently cleared the crossbar with room to spare, causing defensive teammates to hug him in celebration.

That's a bit deceiving - it's easier to get better distances a mile above sea level (Denver) than at/close to sea level (Pittsburgh).

On an afternoon when the NFL Media newsroom erupted with cheers several times, the loudest was reserved for Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater.

Prater broke the NFL record with a 64-yard field goal to draw within one point of the Tennessee Titans going into halftime of Sunday's game.

The previous record of 63 yards was shared by Tom Dempsey, Jason Elam, Sebastian Janikowski and David Akers.

The prodigious boots by Prater, Elam and Janikowski all occurred in Denver, where the thin air gives kickers an advantage.

Not saying it wouldn't be worth bringing in the one the Broncos don't keep to kick the tires (it would), just lending some perspective.

Being at the game live, I can tell you (in case you didn't know) our current kicker has a pop gun leg. Kick offs are short (not that we aren't used to that) but even the FG he made just barely was far enough.

Jags kickers blasted every kick off through the back of the end zone every time.

The good news is Jags have long time incumbent Scobee AND a rookie with a monster leg. They won't likely keep both, so we can get whoever they cut.

I would gladly take either of those two Broncos kickers over Hartley.

The Steelers should be watching the waiver wire for kickers.

They won't. Maybe they could teach Landry to be the next long snapper.

I want a young "no name" guy off the waiver wire. I wouldn't even sign one for this preseason week. I'd stick one of the punters in there and just wait for a younger guy in hopes that he could be the kicker of the future.
