QB Jones to get majority of snaps vs. Vikings

By Mark Kaboly
Friday, Aug. 7, 2015

Landry Jones has played in six preseason games in two seasons:

Date Opp. Snaps C-A Yds. TD INT Rating

8/10/13 Giants 15 5-9 48 0 0 70.6

8/19/13 at Redskins 34 9-22 111 1 0 72.3

8/29/13 at Panthers 66 16-35 189 1 3 36.5

8/9/14 at Giants 31 11-21 74 0 0 60.4

8/16/14 Bills 18 2-5 53 0 1 40.0

8/28/14 Panthers 35 14-18 97 0 0 89.1

Total: 57 of 110 for 572 yards, 2 TDs, 4 INTS, 57.8 passer rating

Don't tell Landry Jones preseason games are meaningless.

This one Sunday could end up meaning everything to the former standout college quarterback.

Jones will not only start Sunday's Pro Football Hall of Fame Game against the Vikings, but he will play deep into the second half and possibly the entire game.

It could be the defining moment of Jones' unassuming career. At least that's how quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner is viewing it.

“He has had his moments before, but none more definitive than this in this part of his career,” Fichtner said following practice Friday. “He is getting a whole lot of work with (first string), the (second string) and now is the time to let this all come together.”

The Steelers are trying to decipher if Jones could be trusted to be Ben Roethlisberger's long-term backup.

Bruce Gradkowski, 32, is in the final year of his contract. Jones has one season left on his rookie contract, but the Steelers could cut ties with the former fourth-round pick before that.

I think this will be his swan song. Maybe he had an epiphany, but I think the coaching staff is saying put up or get out.

On the bright side, with Jones in there most of the game the punters will see plenty of work.

HoF Game Huge For Steelers QB

Aug 07, 2015

Publisher SteelCityInsider.net

Mike Tomlin and the rest of Steelers Nation are ready for Landry Jones to finally show something at the start of his third season.

It's only the Hall of Fame game, but it may as well be the Super Bowl for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Landry Jones.

Mike Tomlin called it a "significant game" for Jones, a third-year player who has yet to appear in an NFL contest.

With Ben Roethlisberger sitting this one out, and backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski sidelined with a "dead arm," Tomlin said Jones will play a lot, maybe the entire game against the Minnesota Vikings.

"We don't have a pre-determined snap count," said Tomlin. "We're going to let him play until we've seen enough and then maybe give somebody else some work. He could play the entire game. He could play a majority of the game. Our intention is to get a good look at him."
The former fourth-round draft pick has yet to impress the Steelers through two preseasons, but he's coming off his best week of practice yet.

"His performance has been on a steady incline out there, but that's out there," Tomlin said of the St. Vincent College practice field. "We prepare and play out there for what transpires in stadiums, and I'm excited about watching him play."

Substituting for Jones won't be an easy decision for Tomlin, either. Former Clemson standout Tajh Boyd hasn't been impressive this camp, and the only other options are Tyler Murphy and Devin Gardner, two undrafted rookie free agents who were brought to camp as wide receivers.

Early reports were still saying that he looked terrible and was being outplayed by Boyd.

I don't know how that suddenly changed in the last few days.

We'll see how he does tonight.

I'm going to hell for laughing at that.

So far, the Landry Jones experiment is exactly what we expected it to be: subpar with a lot of mediocrity. He's making some throws, but the fact remains that the offense is dead and uninspired when he's on the field.

Time to end the experiment.

Three points against the scrub defense and not looking very good doing it. The guy sucks shit. Time to go trade him for a bag of dog food.

He made some throws...missed a lot of opportunities and throws...didn't get a lot of support from the receivers...a lot of mistakes and a lot of drops. But Jones didn't impress during the time he was out there...he should NOT have a roster spot at the end of camp...

Jones should be delivering packages and hopefully to the right address. How he makes a living in the NFL is a complete mystery to me.

Hopefully they give the other few guys a chance to play instead of Jones or go sign Vick. Otherwise we are going into the season with Jones as our QB3 whether we like it or not.

Agreed. This guy blows. He looked like an unathletic Kordell Stewart (16-32, 135 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT). I just hope he doesn't hang around in the QB rotation for years on end the same way Stewart did.

Preseason is a time for vanilla offenses and defenses, just to see if guys can handle the NFL basics.

Landry Jones isn't even good enough for College Level at this point. He can't run even the most basic offenses.

Landry Jones doesn’t do much to earn No. 2 job

Posted by Mike Florio on August 10, 2015

As expected, third-year quarterback Landry Jones threw every pass for the Steelers on Sunday night. It wasn’t a stellar start for the man who’s trying to prove that he can be a competent backup to starter Ben Roethlisbeger.

Jones completed 16 of 32 passes for 135 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Jones generated a passer rating of 61.3.

He led the Steelers to only one score in 11 drives, with an impressive 35-yard throw to Shakim Phillips (who made an even more impressive catch, beating first-round cornerback Trae Waynes) fueling a field goal, Pittsburgh’s only points of the night. Jones missed a wide-open Sammie Coates later in the drive, for what could have been a touchdown.

Landry throws pretty spirals but he can't hit the broad side of a barn. Jessie Clank James didn't help him

Sammie Coates showed some speed and moves but his was a wasted effort. He coulda had a couple TD's with Ben out there

Did anybody see anyone talking with Landry Jones on the sidelines at all? I don't think there is much hope for him when none of the players want him to QB. You would think WRs would be telling him what to look for when they know they can get open and stuff. They all know he won't get the ball there most of the time anyway. His timing is awful.

SteelerFanInStl
08-10-2015, 08:07 PM
He simply doesn't have what it takes to be a QB in the NFL. It's time to move on and find someone who won't be an automatic loss when he has to play in a game.
