View Full Version : Justin Gilbert looking like another Browns bust

Great attention has been paid to Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel, a 2014 first-round pick who was a major disappointment as a rookie and isn’t expected to start this year. But Manziel may not have been the biggest bust of the Browns’ 2014 draft class.

That honor could go instead to cornerback Justin Gilbert, who was chosen eighth overall last year (14 spots ahead of Manziel) and has also been a huge disappointment.

Gilbert spent most of his time on the bench last year amid talk that he wasn’t working hard enough in practice and hadn’t earned the respect of veteran teammates. He was deactivated for Week 17 because he showed up late to a team meeting.

This year in training camp, Gilbert is buried on the depth chart: Even when starting cornerbacks Tramon Williams and Joe Haden were given off days, Gilbert didn’t get first-string reps, according to ESPNCleveland.com. Pierre Desier, a fourth-round pick last year, is the cornerback moving onto the first team when the veteran starters are out of practice.

Gilbert should thank Manziel everyday. He's so far under the radar because of Johnny Football that people forget this guys is even on the Browns...

The 2014 draft for the the Browns has been a real disaster.

If the Browns would have taken Teddy Bridgewater instead of Manziel and Odell Beckham instead of Gilbert, the Browns would have been a contender now in the AFC North.

I'm sure they would've still found a way to screw it up.

How is the Browns screwing up another 1st round draft pick news?

SOB = Same Old Browns

New GM. New coach. Newish owner. Same sucky team.

The new uniforms (which are horrible IMO), is just like slapping lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig.

Cleveland should have let the name, colors, and history go to Baltimore with Modell. Maybe the curse would have traveled there too. It's truly what those hypocrites deserve.

I remember quite a few of our own fans clamoring for this guy leading up to the '14 Draft...

I think I had him on my list...not sure I was clamoring, but I think I wouldn't have been upset with him. You always wonder how players would've done being drafted on a different team and in different situations.

I was clamoring for Bryant in that draft though...lol.

I was in the minority in that I had concerns that Gilbert was athletic but lacked technique. I campaigned for Darqueze Dennard. Though Dennard hasn't broken into the starting rotation, (Stuck behind two other first round picks) he has shown promise this training camp and looks to be on the verge of becoming a star player.

I recall that.

I wrote an article just prior to that draft in which I suggested we might look at Bryant and Tuitt after day one.

I was after Fuller, get ready to hear that name again this year.

Maybe the Browns aren't missing on talent. They seem to miss potential character issues. This guy seems like a headcase and look at a guy like Josh Gordon. A ton of talent but always getting suspended.

Not to mention Manziel. Maybe he's getting his crap together...

he seems to lack motivation and this also could be coaching as well. i like the kid a lot but cleveland just sucks the life out of players

Yeah Gilbert was the one everyone was saying had the most upside but was the least polished. I don't recall character concerns but I think a lot of us here didn't think we'd have a shot at him or that the FO was even looking to draft him at all. I do agree with Tex, Fuller was the guy we all wanted there at the end. I did like Dennard, will be interesting to see how he does this season in Bungleville.

On a related note, Pierre Desir is a good player though, sad he landed in Cleveland, but not surprised he's doing well.

I think a lot has to do with the team as a whole. The browns are a disaster who need to learn to have patience. One year is not enough time to develop a team or better yet a system. Get a vision of what you want to do then go about getting the personnel to develop the team and then give it time to develop.

That's the thing about the Browns...the ownership changed, management changed, players changed, uniforms changed, EVERYTHING changed and they are still "the Browns."

Monday was not a good day for Browns CB Justin Gilbert

The Browns took to the practice field in Rochester with the Bills Monday missing half of their starting secondary; backup cornerbacks Pierre Desir and Robert Nelson were out, too.

So, 2014 first-round pick Justin Gilbert knew he was going to be busy. And Gilbert was apparently kept very busy by the Bills quarterbacks and wide receivers.

“Never seen such a rough day,” Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal tweeted.

The Browns expected to have a strong secondary — and still do — but are playing shorthanded right now; top corner Joe Haden and free safety Tashaun Gipson were out Monday. Early in camp, Desir played in front of Gilbert with the starting defense when Haden was given a veteran day off from practice.

These are important reps for Gilbert, whose rookie season included on-field struggles, multiple benchings for tardiness or maturity issues and Browns coach Mike Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer eventually saying Gilbert was dealing with “personal issues” in addition to trying to play catch up in his first NFL season.

Gilbert started last week’s preseason opener and was beaten badly by Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon on a deep ball that Garcon dropped. After the game Gilbert told reporters his technique was “flawless” during the game except for that play.

The Browns need Gilbert, the No. 8 pick in the 2014 draft, but had to sign veteran cornerback Tramon Williams in March because they can’t trust that he’s ready to produce.

It sounds to me like a guy who can't handle the lack of success. He's been a great player everywhere he's been up until now without really having to work at it. He got to the NFL and found out that it was going to be tough and can't handle the failure.

We'll see what happens but guys like that wash out of the NFL all the time.

That's kinda like saying the Titanic had a perfect safety record until it hit the iceberg. :chuckle:

The guy doesn't have it mentally. He can't accept that he's not as good as he's been told by others and instead of working at getting better and becoming a solid starter at the least, he buries his head in the sand and says his technique is "flawless."

Looking more and more like the Browns drafted two first round busts the other year. And two the year before that.

If there's a way to screw up having two first round picks, the Cleveland Browns will find a way to do it.
