Mike Mitchell learned a lot in his first year with the Steelers.
Actually, it was a little too much for his liking.
“I learned so much I darn well near have my doctorate in anatomy,” he said.
Mitchell learned it wasn't a pair of torn groins that caused him so much discomfort last year. Rather, it was a core muscle injury, which is when the abductor muscle detached from his pubic bone. Mitchell had both of his muscles detach.
A renowned surgeon in the field of core muscle injuries, Dr. William C. Meyers at the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia repaired those injuries, but not until after a season in which Mitchell played 96 percent of the defensive snaps.
Then there was that ring finger that kept dislocating, so Mitchell underwent another surgery to have a plate inserted to prevent further dislocations.
“I know a lot about anatomy now,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell also learned a lot about himself, and he believes that will make him a better player this year.
