After 11 consecutive years of doing it one way under Dick LeBeau, the Steelers defense will have a different set of fingerprints on their schemes and coverages this season. And they won’t just belong to Keith Butler, the new defensive coordinator.

Mike Tomlin has been more actively involved in what the defense will be doing in 2015, and it’s already been evident at training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. Tomlin has spent periods of several days this week working with the cornerbacks and safeties on zone coverages similar to what he employed when he was the secondary coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It’s the first time since he became head coach in 2007 that Tomlin outwardly has put his imprint on the defense and changed the way the Steelers play in the secondary. He didn’t do it his first eight years out of deference and respect for LeBeau, a Hall of Fame player and one of the greatest assistant coaches in NFL history.........

Why did he have to wait until Dick was gone? He is head coach; why couldn't he have instituted what he wanted, when he wanted?

He said long ago when he was first hired that LeBeau's defense was LeBeau's. He didn't want to "mess with it."

Don't think we are going to see the full Tomlin until this season. Lebeau was too respected and given too much control, as was Arians. 3 years removed from Arians and we have a dominating offense. I hope it does not take 3 years to get the defense on track.

Exactly. He was deferring to LeBeau. It wasn't difficult to see that Tomlin would get involved with the defense once LeBeau was no longer here.

This.....plus the D was playing at a pretty high level. Why mess with what was working?
