NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has upheld the four-game suspension of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady over Deflategate.

In a ruling announced today, the league said Goodell has denied Brady’s appeal.

“NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell upheld today the four-game suspension imposed on New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady on May 11. Brady’s appeal ‎from that discipline was heard for more than ten hours on June 23,” the league’s statement said.

“In the opinion informing Brady that his appeal had been denied, Commissioner Goodell emphasized important new information disclosed by Brady and his representatives in connection with the hearing.

“On or shortly before March 6, the day that Tom Brady met with independent investigator Ted Wells and his colleagues, Brady directed that the cell phone he had used for the prior four months be destroyed. He did so even though he was aware that the investigators had requested access to text messages and other electronic information that had been stored on that phone. ‎During the four months that the cell phone was in use, Brady had exchanged nearly 10,000 text messages, none of which can now be retrieved from that device. The destruction of the cell phone was not disclosed until June 18, almost four months after the investigators had first sought electronic information from Brady.

Wow! I certainly did not expect this to be upheld.

I don't think Roger grew a new pair of balls though, I think he'd rather face the federal court, if Tommy Boy decides to pursue that angle, over the league perception internally.

Holy crap . . .

Not only did Goodell uphold it, but he specified that after further evidence, Brady was in fact cheating, and new evidence supports it. "The commissioner found that Brady’s deliberate destruction of potentially relevant evidence went beyond a mere failure to cooperate in the investigation and supported a finding that he had sought to hide evidence of his own participation in the underlying scheme to alter the footballs."

By Brady's legal team. To my knowledge, it was the Patriots' lawyers that came up with the "Deflator" nonsense. I expect it from the fans, but it's really funny when it comes from some high-priced lawyer. If I'm Kraft, I'm looking for new representation, that's all I'll say...

Not just that. Destroying a phone may be coincidence. But destroying a phone which the investigator asked to analyze shortly before the investigator arrives does not leave much room for doubt.

Statement from the Patriots on Goodell ruling

Tuesday, July 28, 2015 6:00 PM EDT

By New England Patriots

@patriots (http://twitter.com/patriots)

STATEMENT FROM THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
"We are extremely disappointed in today’s ruling by Commissioner Goodell. We cannot comprehend the league’s position in this matter. Most would agree that the penalties levied originally were excessive and unprecedented, especially in light of the fact that the league has no hard evidence of wrongdoing. We continue to unequivocally believe in and support Tom Brady (http://www.patriots.com/team/players/roster/tom-brady). We also believe that the laws of science continue to underscore the folly of this entire ordeal. Given all of this, it is incomprehensible as to why the league is attempting to destroy the reputation of one of its greatest players and representatives."

It doesn't matter. The same things from yesterday still hold true: no way Brady ordered a ball boy to deflate footballs a miniscule amount in the bathroom. Did. Not. Happen.

I am assuming that TB12 did not destroy his cell phone.

I am assuming that Wells was unable to covertly retrieve messages from TB12's phone and he is concluding that he destroyed his phone. The NFL is taking what Wells said as gospel.

I am assuming that TB12 is sharpening his sword.

Just heard WHY Brady received four games as a sentence.

According to Goodell in his ruling, Brady is compared to a PED offender hurting the integrity of the game by using other methods to enhance his abilities. So, the suspension for first time PED violation is . . . 4 games. Brady's? 4 games. That logic actually makes a whole lot of sense.

Yeah, all these people going "OMG GREG HARDY ONLY GOT 4 GAMES HOW CAN BRADY GET 4 GAMES OMFG!!!!" are idiots. Of course something that affects the game itself is going to get a relatively harsher penalty than what you do off the field. Tom Brady can go manipulate all the balls he wants in his free time and I couldn't care less. That's a lifestyle choice. Cheating IN THE GAME should be punished more severely. Just like it's not ILLEGAL to be on a baseball game, but if you do it while you're a professional baseball player, you bet you're getting banned.

I personally could do without all the BS penalties for off-the-field conduct. There are people in charge of that already, and they're called the police. Suspending people every time they get arrested doesn't do anything to change the image of the league or stop the behavior. They've been dong it for 10 years now and everything is the same, because out of 1,500-odd players, a couple dozen a year are just going to do some stupid shit. If anything, the suspensions draw MORE attention to bad behavior, because every time someone puts a foot wrong, it's a media frenzy of omg omg omg omg omg how many games is he going to get, omg omg is the league saying ______ is worse than domestic violence omg.

If I killed Goodell and became the new commissioner (pretty sure that's how it works), the first thing I would do is say there is going to be no more league discipline for off-the-field stuff; that is between you and the cops, and the league just is not interested because sticking your nose in it only makes it worse.

While we are at it tell me how come Ben didn't get to be around the team or Steeler facilities on allegations while Brady can and Bens suspension was for 6 and reduced to 4 but Brady's was 4 all along.

I agree with @steelreserve...the people comparing Hardy to Brady don't get it. Brady tarnished the game...more than once...and didn't cooperate with the investigation. Hardy got 4 games for off the field "hi jinx" and let's not forget, Hardy was also suspended significant time in 2014...to the tune of 15 games? The #ShadyBrady fans out there seem to overlook that...

If I recall correctly, Ben was allowed to attend training camp and the preseason games. He wasn't allowed at the facility or contact with the team during the 4 game suspension, which what I assume will happen to Brady*.

Brady* is acting like a little bitch (he is a little bitch and everybody knows it) because he feels entitled as "the face of the NFL".

Ben took his punishment like a man, even if he didn't agree with it. He shouldered the blame for the entire incident like a man....and let that girl get on with her life while his reputation was ruined and his career nearly destroyed. Then he did everything Goodell and the Rooney's expected of him and then some. He never, ever once has said anything negative about Goodell or his punishment since the day it came down and it has taken years to rebuild the goodwill between him and the fans. You can tell by every word that comes out of his mouth that he is grateful for getting a second chance.

Ben is much more mature and a bigger man than Brady* will ever be.

Yes Ben was allowed to practice and pre-season, but then was not allowed to use the team facilities or even communicate with the team, but I don't think the same is going on with Shady Brady but I could be wrong. This.

As disgusting as the incident with Ben was, the fact of the matter is he learned he needed to grow up, and he did. That four game suspension and whatever else he went through during that time was literally the turning point in his maturity. Had Goodell (or, as I still refer to him when it comes to the Pats* spying scandal, Good-deal) actually did something other than a slap on the wrist the first time the Pats* cheated, maybe Brady would have learned from it.

Not anymore he can't .. the reason why the NFL filed a lawsuit preemptively is to ensure the venue would be New York, not Minnesota. So that door is shut.
