It's really, really hard to win a Super Bowl without superior safety play.

Whether it's a face-bashing intimidator (Rodney Harrison), an instinctive center fielder (Ed Reed) or a free-roaming wild man (Troy Polamalu), championship teams usually feature at least one game-changing player at the back end of their defense.


The Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowls with Hall of Fame free safety Willie Wood patrolling center field. The New England Patriots won the most recent Super Bowl with talented free safety Devin McCourty — maybe not a Hall of Famer but a player the Patriots went to great lengths to retain, signing him to a $47.5 million contract.


Look at the 15 Super Bowl champions this millennium. Their rosters are littered with impact safeties, from Rod Woodson to Lawyer Milloy, Harrison, Polamalu, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas, Antrel Rolle, Bob Sanders, Darren Sharper, Nick Collins, Reed and John Lynch.
