PITTSBURGH -- Scenes of Jerome Bettis embracing Ben Roethlisberger and the Super Bowl XL game ball were almost erased before his final season began.
Before the 2005 season, Bettis told the Pittsburgh Steelers he was finished, only to change his mind and return for his only Super Bowl title and the team's first since the 1979 season, he said on a conference call ahead of his Hall of Fame induction. The decision changed the perception of his career, he said.
"I was very, very close to retiring, he said. "In fact, I talked to the team and told the team that I was retiring. So I was pretty much done."
