The Golden Anniversary of the Steelers’ summer camp at Saint Vincent College may be like few of the previous 49. For one, there is irony in what long ago was known as the Steel Curtain.

Rarely has their defense been so undefined, yet so seemingly set. The team checks into a dormitory near Latrobe Saturday with virtually every starting position already assured, on offense AND defense. Mike Tomlin would never admit that, but what coach would?

The goal of training camp is to get his team ready to play when the regular season starts Sept. 10 at New England It is not to determine who will earn the final four roster spots. The starting lineups are virtually set barring, of course, injury.

“I love camp,” Tomlin said in his closing remarks at minicamp in June. “I love the environment where you get the opportunity to just focus on football and live together, dine together and be secluded, if you will. It’s just a good environment for team building.”

Team building is much different than building a team. The Steelers have put together their team on offense and defense. Now it’s time to get them ready. There remain questions about whether the defense and a handful of individuals will be up to it.

New defensive coordinator Keith Butler has many issues confronting him even if he already knows his starting lineup; four of the most important are linebackers Jarvis Jones and Ryan Shazier, and Cortez Allen and Shamarko Thomas in the secondary.
