The most important thing for the TE position is to get out of camp with Heath Miller healthy.

TIGHT ENDS

In terms of this position on this particular Steelers team, the top priority should be to get to the start of the regular season with Heath Miller and Matt Spaeth both healthy.

It was back on Dec. 23, 2012 – in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Heinz Field – when Miller sustained a serious injury to his right knee. After spending all of the ensuing offseason rehabilitating from surgery, Miller opened training camp in 2013 on the physically unable to perform list. He improved enough to be inactive only for the first two games of the regular season before going on to finish with 58 catches for 593 yards and one touchdown.

The process of overcoming the kind of injury Miller had sustained often requires a full calendar year, and there were some who misinterpreted that with him being at the end of his career. Able to utilize the 2014 offseason to get himself ready for the rigors of an NFL season instead of being forced to rehabilitate a serious injury, Miller rebounded with a season in which he started all 16 games and finished with 66 catches for 761 yards and three touchdowns.

As a player who will be 33 in October, Miller remains far and away the best tight end the Steelers have, and he still is a valuable dual-threat weapon at the position. He can expect to get the occasional day off during the rigors of training camp and the preseason, because the Steelers need him and it’s not as though there’s any question about his ability to get the job done if healthy.

Spaeth will be 32 in late November, and his recent injury history dates back to the 2013 training camp, his first with the Steelers following his return from two seasons with the Chicago Bears. During that summer, Spaeth injured a foot, and it required surgery. He opened that season on the injured reserve/designated to return list, and he didn’t get onto the field until Dec. 8 against the Miami Dolphins. Then with an entire offseason to get his body ready for a season, Spaeth came back in 2014 to start 15 games and provide the offense with the in-line blocking it needs to make the running game a success.

That’s the situation at the top of the depth chart here, with the third spot totally up for grabs.

The candidates include Rob Blanchflower, Jesse James, Michael Egnew, and Cameron Clear.

TE Analysis - One aging quality guy who is getting pretty slow and a bunch of ham and eggers who won't amount to anything, meaning we draft a TE by the 3rd round next year.

Aging and slow? Heard that story before about this team. Up until 2014...which is pretty much today...Miller's production has pretty much been very similar to when he was a "premiere TE." Not really seeing where people are getting this "Heath Miller is on the downside/old and slow" notion. Obviously it's coming as he's getting up there in age, but there is no signs in any of his production, receiving wise or blocking wise that shows he is old and slow.

He's never been fast, sure his TDs are down, but when you have AB, LB and now MB...the TDs are harder to come by...for anyone.

TIGHT END -- Heath Miller is still a threat and Matt Spaeth said the knee injury that caused him to miss most of the spring won't be a problem at training camp. That leaves one spot, since fullback Will Johnson is considered half a tight end. That one spot will likely go to fifth-round rookie Jesse James, unless Rob Blanchflower or undrafted rookie Cameron Clear shocks the world this preaseason. Otherwise those two will battle for a spot on the practice squad.

• The Steelers claimed rookie tight end Ray Hamilton (6-foot-4, 252, Iowa) off waivers from the Cowboys and placed Rob Blanchflower on the waived/injured list.

Here is the critical question for the Steelers TEs as a position group. For the sake of argument, let us exclude Miller in this. With the cohort of receivers that the Steelers have (AB, Wheaton, Bryant, and Coates), what does the TE actually need to do in this offense? Just because other teams have a "seam stretching" or "move" TE in their prolific offenses, does not mean the Steelers need one. I would argue that a strong blocker and a "sneaky" TE that can find gaps and holes in zones to be an outlet for Roethlisberger when the primary targets are covered or the play breaks down is the ideal fit for this offense.

So slow and not that athletic doesn't really matter for the Steelers. We don't need Jimmy Grahamn or Gronkowski (obviously neither of those guys would hurt!). We need a Miller or Witten type.

Let me break down the reasons why each guy could, and I stress, could be in trouble.

Matt Spaeth – The Steelers are very pleased so far with both Jesse James and Cameron Clear. The deciding factor will be run blocking. If both, especially James, can hold their own in that capacity then that makes Spaeth expendable.

James has shown better receiving capability that first thought and Clear has caught several TD passes the last couple of days in scrimmages.

I agree with this. Don't forget Bell being used as a receiving threat so that's another reason we don't need a prolific TE. We need a physical blue collar guy that gets the job done blocking and like you said can sneak into openings and be a check down for Ben.

Inside the Steelers: Rookie TE Clear records another 2-TD day

By Chris Adamski
Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015

• Quite the darkhorse after totaling 10 collegiate catches for three different schools, tight end Cameron Clear has had consecutive two-touchdown days at Steelers camp. The first Thursday was during the “Seven Shots” 2-point conversion-style drill, the next ending a long two-minute drill drive by converting a fourth-and-6 from outside the 15.

• The offense had a clean sweep during the daily “Seven Shots.” Roethlisberger flipped short touchdown passes to Bell, Heath Miller and Brown. In addition to one to Clear, Landry Jones' scoring throws were when rookie tight end Jesse James showed nice extension to haul in a ball and when converted quarterback Devin Gardner caught a fade route. Also, Cameron Stingily scored on a run up the middle.

He has never been fast, sure. But my evaluation is based on just watching him play. Not to mention he tore an ACL and that usually doesn't help things. After a catch now, he seems to be running in a labored manner, like he just can't get his speed up at all. He actually had a record season for yards last year, but I kind of attribute some of that to being on such a potent O to begin with that teams can't focus on stopping HM, they have to be too occupied with AB, LB and the others so HM can sneak open. I am not saying he isn't still a good player. And he is absolutely an integral part of the rush blocking.

It would be one thing if this was his only bad moment of the night, but it wasn't. The fumble was terrible and he had a flag and blew it on special teams too.

He underproduced at PSU and it appears he is ready to do the same.

And was missing blocks throughout the game.
