The 2013 Seattle Seahawks rode one of the best single-season defenses in history to a Super Bowl romp over Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos. They were recognized at the time for being one of the best defenses ever, but a common critique was that it was just one season. The Chicago Bears in the 80s, the Baltimore Ravens at the turn of the century, the Steel Curtain Steelers of the 70s, and others, had sustained dominance. Obscured by an injury-ravaged finale of 2014, the Seahawks defense has now quietly put together a three-year stretch of dominance never before seen in the NFL.

lol, no. They're good, but not remotely near the best ever.
Any discussion about the "best defense ever" is going to be near impossible to carry out because of the salary cap and because what they're defending against has changed completely. The Seahawks may well be the best defense yet against the quick passing game and the read-option, but I don't think they would be nearly as effective against the styles of offense that prevailed in between the "Grrrrr Pound The Ball On The Ground Stupidly" Era and the "Throw The Ball 95 Percent Of The Time And Completely Ignore The Running Game" Era. They'd probably be great at stopping Dan Marino, but an offense like the '90s Bills would be something they'd never seen before and would probably match up terribly against.
The best defense in history would have kept the Patriots from scoring enough points to beat them in the Super Bowl. In addition, the best defense in history would have posted at least one shutout in the regular season too.

The "Best Defense In History" are just five months removed from being the first team in Super Bowl history to blow a 10-point lead, and lose.
Don't get me wrong, I like the Legion of Boom, but best ever? Nah.
