With the NHL draft now behind us, I decided it was time to start a new Tidbits page, as we usually do this time of year.

The Penguins only had 4 picks in this year's draft. The WBS Pens highlighted the picks: http://wbspenguins.com/articles/2015-nhl-draft-recap#

Also, there are rumors going around that Pittsburgh offered Pouliot, Kunitz, Scuderi and a 2016 1st round pick to Toronto in exchange for Phil Kessel. While I would not be upset to see Kuni and Scuds go, I do not want to see a good, young prospect like Pouliot traded away.

I agree, but it sounds like Martin wants to really stay in Pittsburgh and is willing to take a big hometown discount contract. I know Martin is getting up there in age, but the dude can still anchor a blue line and bring experience where it is needed. If Martin does stay I truly believe Pouliot is gone to get that big name winger they are dying for.

We shall see what happens, here to hoping good ole Jimmy boy works some magic.

How's everyone feel about the Ian Cole signing? I am asking because I am really not sure. Seems like a cap friendly signing, but I don't know enough about the cap.

Could this be a signing to keep a young vet to keep Pouliot and also possibly sign Martin, but if Martin cannot/will not sign "oh well"?

Cole wasn't terrible when he came over to the Pens last season. I think our defense will consist of Letang, Maata, Cole, Pouliot, Dumoulin and some combination of either Harrington, Chorney or another free agent (Martin, etc.)

Just a quick question because seriously I really don't feel like researching it. Do we have any big, physical blue liners in the pipeline? I don't know enough of Harrington or Chorney, but I do know that Letang, Maata, and the majority of the current bunch are just technical defenders, and not real good at moving someone out from in front MAF.

NHL Trade Rumors: Can the Penguins pull off a Phil Kessel trade?

Any Kessel to Pittsburgh trade logistically will have to include salary relief for the Penguins. One would think at least 2 of Nick Spaling (http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/54449/nick-spaling)($2.2 million hit, 1 year remaining), Rob Scuderi (http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/55394/rob-scuderi) ($3.375 million for 2 years), Chris Kunitz (http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/54511/chris-kunitz) ($3.85 million for 2 years) and Brandon Sutter (http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/54243/brandon-sutter) ($3.3 million for 1 year).

From there, Toronto will need more valuable pieces for Kessel. It's widely believed that includes one of Olli Maatta (http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/157206/olli-maatta) or Derrick Pouliot (http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/157193/derrick-pouliot), with it believed that Maatta is viewed (http://triblive.com/sports/penguins/8599473-74/rutherford-penguins-picks#axzz3eNFgtZ32) as more untouchable than Pouliot.

Penguins trade for Phil Kessel

The Pittsburgh Penguins made a big splash on the first day of free agency, completing a trade with Toronto for star winger Phil Kessel.

The Penguins acquired the five-time 30-goal scorer for forward Nick Spaling, a pair of prospects and a third-round draft selection in 2016.

Along with Kessel, Toronto sent defenseman Tim Erixon and forward prospect Tyler Biggs to Pittsburgh.

The Penguins dealt forward Kasperi Kapanen and defenseman Scott Harrington to the Maple Leafs.

The deal also involves conditional draft choices

Kessel is signed through the 2021-22 season and carries an annual $8 million salary cap hit. However, Toronto is retaining 15 percent of Kessel's salary per year, meaning Kessel will count for $6.8 million against Pittsburgh's

Gotta say, see ya Phil. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Sid is happy as shit

Happy Canada Day, Sidney Crosby.

The captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins said Wednesday that he believes blockbuster acquisition Phil Kessel will be a welcome addition to team.

“He’s an elite scorer and has a lot of speed. I see him fitting in well with us,” Crosby told Pittsburgh reporter Josh Yohe (http://dkonpittsburghsports.com/2015/07/01/report-penguins-acquire-kessel-from-toronto/).

Phil Kessel trade makes Penguins big winners on Day 1 of NHL free agency

The Pittsburgh Penguins were an undeniable winner on the first day of free agent hunting season because they bagged the biggest difference-maker in the marketplace.

While other NHL teams were picking through a mediocre free agent crop, the Penguins made a bold trade to acquire speedy right wing Phil Kessel from the Toronto Maple Leafs to be Sidney Crosby's linemate.

‘It’s hard to find players like Phil Kessel’

Over the last five seasons, only Alex Ovechkin, Steven Stamkos, and Corey Perry have scored more goals than Kessel. And Kessel’s center has mostly been Tyler Bozak. In Pittsburgh, it’ll be Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin.

We don't need him to be a leader, or anything else. Just score goals.... say 40+ goals and 90 pts a year playing with Sid.

Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Hornquist, Letang on the PP

Gonna be amazing to watch

It should be noted that the $4 mil signing bonus owed to Kessel on 1 Jul was paid by the Leafs and not passed on to the Pens in this trade.

So with the $4 mil + $1.25 mil retention the Leafs are paying Kessel $5.25 mil to play with the Pens this season.

And the first-round pick is conditional on the Pens making the playoffs, so Leafs fans will be rooting for us too.

He’s a two-time KHL All-Star and has been on the last two Russian National Teams for the IIHF World Championships. This year he scored one goal and one assist in 10 games en route to a silver medal while playing with new teammate Evgeni Malkin. The prior year he helped Russia capture the gold when he posted six goals and six assists in 10 games and was named to the tournament All-Star team.

Pittsburgh sends Brandon Sutter and a 2016 third-round pick for Bonino, defenseman Adam Clendening and a 2016 second-round pick. There is no salary retention involved.

Meanwhile, Fehr signs for 3 seasons at $2 million per. The only monkey wrench in that deal is that the 29-year old forward underwent elbow surgery last month and is expected to miss 4-6 months

Beau Bennett has agreed to a one-year, $800,000 contract with the Penguins.

Bennett has the potential to develop into a top-six forward, but he hasn't progressed as projected. Gonchar Returns

Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford went back to the future on Friday morning, as 2009 Stanley Cup champion defenseman Sergei Gonchar is set to return to Pittsburgh on a professional tryout contract.

For the 20-year veteran, even though this deal comes with the caveat of having to try out for the team, there was only one club that Gonchar zeroed in on when his contract with the Montreal Canadiens expired on July 1.

“The Penguins were the only team that I was looking at,” said Gonchar, who had 14 points (3G-14A) in 22 playoff games with Pittsburgh during its ’09 Cup run. “We’ve been talking for a while now. We had to wait for them to finish making all of their moves.”

The 41-year-old blueliner will arrive in Pittsburgh for training camp next month as the oldest member of the roster, three years the senior of the next-closest player, center Matt Cullen. Gonchar is coming with one goal in mind.

“My goal is to come to camp and show the team that I can still play,” Gonchar said. “Then I want to help the team in any way that I can. Whatever the team needs I’ll try to do. That’s the way that I am looking at it.”

Penguins' owners looking for record $750M for team

The owners of the Pittsburgh Penguins are asking $750 million (U.S.) for the team, but face long odds of finding a buyer who’s willing to pay that much because of the flagging North American economy and uncertainty over the future of the Canadian dollar, sports investment bankers say

Currency analysts with Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in August that the Canadian dollar could fall to 65 U.S. cents before the end of 2016.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly rejected the idea that currency swings would impact the Penguins sale.

"Canadian dollar would not play into a transaction like this at all,” he wrote in an email.

The NHL’s Canadian national television revenue is worth $433 million (CAD) for each of the 30 NHL teams — roughly $14 million (CAD) per season. With a Canadian dollar that averages 90 cents U.S., that yearly income converts to about $13 million (U.S.). If the dollar is worth 75 cents U.S., the Canadian income converts instead to $10.7 million (U.S.).

Some bankers justify the steep price by pointing out other recent NHL team sales.

The Florida Panthers were sold for $160 million in 2013, Forbes magazine reported, while Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos told TSN in an interview his team is worth $450 million. The NHL reportedly wants $500 million apiece for expansion teams.

“Franchise expansion fees usually act as the price floor for team values,” Dorweiler said. “But I don’t see that happening now. In this case, even if an expansion team is worth $500 million, I don’t think that means the Florida Panthers are worth that much, or even $300 million.”

Penguins to open camp with Phil Kessel alongside Sidney Crosby

General manager Jim Rutherford said the team plans to place the high-powered forward alongside star center Sidney Crosby when the Penguins open training camp

Rutherford hopes Kessel's arrival and the return of forward Pascal Dupuis and defenseman Olli Maatta from injuries that took up most of last season will allow Johnston to implement more of the attacking style that led the team to hire him in the first place last summer.

"We'll definitely be able to open it up," Rutherford said. "We'll have a better chance of scoring more. At the same time you have to play the game the right way. You have to shut down teams at a certain time and we're still going to be able to do that."

Rutherford added Fehr is on schedule to return at some point this fall from elbow surgery and that he is pleased with the arrival of the 25-year-old Plotnikov, who left Russia and headed across the globe and play with fellow countryman Malkin.

I'll be happy to see Olli back

Maatta (shoulder) says he's regained the weight and strength he lost while battling a shoulder injury, a case of the mumps, and a cancer diagnosis last season. "All I want to do is be ready Sept. 17 when training camp starts and show the Penguins I can be the same player -- and even better -- than I was before," Maatta said.

http://cdn.dkonpittsburghsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Pouliot.jpg

It happened during the second period of the Penguins rookie tournament opener against Canadiens last week. Derrick Pouliot, in the rarest of moments, became angry and confronted a player. There were nasty words exchanged and a shove.

The 21-year-old defenseman is perhaps the most low-key of the Penguins, which made the incident, while not terribly violent, noteworthy.

Mike Johnston loved it.

While sitting in the Penguins’ suite during the game, Johnston took note of Pouliot’s behavior. Johnston couldn’t stop grinning as he recalled the incident 24 hours later.

“Someone must have really done something to make Pouliot mad,” Johnston said. “That was great.”

Players love new overtime format after test run

The verdict is in on 3-on-3 sudden death overtime: the Penguins love it.

On Saturday, the club played in their final obligatory 3-on-3, sudden death OT of preseason, resulting in a goal by Sidney Crosby at 2:44 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. They still lost the contest, 4-2, in regulation.

Defenseman Derrick Pouliot called it “awesome.” Phil Kessel said it will be “fun to play.” And winger Chris Kunitz expects shootouts to be a thing of the past.

“Probably not too many shootouts are going to be coming,” said Kunitz. “We threw three forwards out there for one second and ended up scoring a goal.”

Most agreed the new format will amount to a slew of goals, and the open ice will inspire all kinds of creativity.

Olli Maatta’s Injury Should Force Trade

Third-year defender Olli Maatta was hit and it was initially believed to be either a knee or shoulder injury. However, a brief amount of time passed and there was some concern that Maatta’s internal organs were damaged, but these worries proved to be a grave overreaction by many.

There is a problem that Maatta’s injury has revealed and it’s just how thin the Penguins defense is. If you’ve watched them play this season, it’s no secret that the unit has struggled as a whole. Losing a player as talented as Maatta will hurt the team more than anyone realizes.

Kris Letang Hurt The Most By Maatta’s Injury

This season has not been one of Kris Letang’s finest. In fact, it’s has been one of his worst as a member of the Penguins. The problem that Letang is facing is that he’s essentially all the Penguins are left with. Ian Cole was used in a top-pairing role and was clearly over his head, Maatta stepped in beautifully but has durability problems and Rob Scuderi, Ben Lovejoy, Brian Dumoulin and Adam Clendening all are not top pairing defenders.

The point is that Letang has only played well with Maatta this season and now he’s out of the lineup for three to four weeks.

When asked about his plans, Jim Rutherford had this to say: At some point, I think we’re going to have to add a top-three or top-four defenseman. It’s something that we’d like to do. Do we have the right top-six guys right now? We might have to make a change there.

It’s painfully obvious that Rutherford is planning on making a move, the question is when will it happen. Additionally, it’s clear to the rest of the league that Pittsburgh will be dealing from a position of weakness and might have to overpay.

A popular name in trade rumors is St. Louis Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo. If Rutherford wants a top-three, or four, defender then Pietrangelo is a perfect candidate to come in and try to help Letang while Maatta is sidelined.

Is it time to start the Pietrangelo watch in Pittsburgh?

Mike Sullivan Named Head Coach of Pittsburgh Penguins

Mike Sullivan has been named head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, it was announced today by General Manager Jim Rutherford.

Sullivan replaces Mike Johnston, who was relieved of his duties earlier today.

Assistant coach Gary Agnew also was relieved of his duties.

Sullivan, 47, was in his first season as head coach of the Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, leading his team to an 18-5 record and first place in the Atlantic Division.

The Marshfield, MA native was head coach of the Boston Bruins from 2003-06 and was an NHL assistant coach for eight seasons with the Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks. He spent the 2014-15 season as player development coach for the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.

Sullivan will be joined on the bench by assistant coaches Rick Tocchet and Jacques Martin when he makes his Pittsburgh debut Monday night against the Washington Capitals at CONSOL Energy Center.

Tocchet has been a Penguins’ assistant coach since the start of the 2014-15 season. Martin began the current season in a newly-created role of special assistant to the head coach, serving as an “eye in the sky” observer from the press box.

“I felt it was time for a coaching change because our team has underachieved,” Rutherford said. “Our expectations are much higher with this group of players."

Pens' Bennett out for Tuesday game after aggravating injury

Beau Bennett won't play against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night after aggravating an upper-body injury, coach Mike Sullivan said after practice Monday.

Bennett made his return to the lineup Saturday afternoon against Vancouver after missing the previous 17 games. In the second period, immediately after delivering a hit to Vancouver defenseman Luca Sbisa in the offensive zone, Bennett went to the locker room for medical attention. He returned to finish the game, but did not practice Morning morning.

Sullivan said Bennett was being evaluated Monday morning and more would be known about his condition during the all-star break, which begins after Tuesday's game.

Now that playoff season is on the horizon and the Pens are knee deep in the hunt I finally get to watch them on a weekly basis, if not twice/thrice a week. The second line with Kessel and Hagelin is awesome with Bonino centering them. Dare I say don't mess up the chemistry and really "F" with other teams strategies and put Geno on the third line. Opposing teams would have a hell of a time trying to figure out a way to defend that. I know it would never happen, but would be fun to see.

Gotta admit, when Geno went down I thought they were toast. And I wasn't even pissed about, because you could see the arrow was finally starting to point up after Sullivan got hired. Even when they lost there was an energy to the team that has been lacking for years.

Anyway I suppose you could say the injury to Malkin was a blessing in disguise as it got guys like Hagelin and Kessell (and many more) to up their game. Now every line we send over the boards is buzzing. No skating around aimlessly waiting for 87 & 71 to carry the load. Anyway the speed and intensity this team is now playing with has been absent since they won their last Cup. Amazing what the right coach and G.M. can do when given the right nucleus.

Last thing, for all the bashing Letang has taken over the years, thank God he's a Penguin! What a horse! Plays 30 minutes a night, and has been tremendous in all zones.
