While drops were a concern in college, Sammie Coates has shown strong hands this offseason.

PITTSBURGH -- With Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant and Markus Wheaton already in the fold, it raised some eyebrows when Pittsburgh drafted Sammie Coates in the third round. And it begs the question: Can Coates make an impact for the Steelers in Year 1?

After studying Coates at Auburn and through the draft process as well as some offseason work, I feel as though the answer to that question is a definitive yes.

What is strikingly apparent when you see Coates is that the 6-foot-1, 212-pound receiver is a big, powerful mover in a mold similar to Terrell Owens. When he opens it up, he can really burn as well.

Coates is more of a go route/deep post type of receiver, as well as a bubble screen or crossing route wideout in which he can use his powerful stride and after-the-catch ability.

He shouldn't try to mimic what Brown is doing. That's a difficult chore for this rookie. To do that would be to overemphasize his routes and think about his footwork rather than running the route as second nature.

Talking to people close to the situation, many brought up that they were very impressed with Coates’ already strong knowledge of Pittsburgh’s playbook.

Also, drops were a huge concern with Coates as a draft prospect, but the word is his large, strong hands catch the ball surprisingly softly.

But Tomlin is not impressed with ANY rookies. Just as well, haven't played real football yet.

Drops in college...some can be attributed to the shitty QB play at Auburn.

His chances of having a "big season" is pretty at zero unless we have a rash of injuries. How is a rookie going to get balls thrown his way when we have Brown, and his 100+ catches, Wheaton (he is better than most realize), Bryant (who already proved as a rookie he needs fed balls every game), not to mention Miller and Bell, who deserve balls thrown their way every game. After those FIVE players get their due balls, how many will that leave for a rookie? Almost none.

Similar could've been said about Bryant last season.

Not the same situation.

Bryant had to find some reps with Brown and Wheaton being the only legit other WRs on the roster.

Coats will have to find reps with Brown, a peaking Wheaton AND a Bryant looking for balls. Less opportunities.

Plus Bell is now established as a pass catcher. Coats will have little balls thrown his way.

He was behind Bryant was behind Brown, Wheaton, Moore. Coming into camp and at the beginning of the season he situation was very similar. He was also, somehow, behind Justin Brown...somehow.

Yea, that's the difference: He was behind JB, who is horrible. Coats will be behind Bryant, who is a proven, NFL-capable playmaker. That is the biggest difference. So, Coats has to find ways to get targeted with 3 legit WRs in front of him, Bryant only had to find balls with two legit WRs ahead of him. And Moore never earned his way to significant targets; I only recall one game where he had more than 1 target.

Bryant is the 2nd best WR of the steelers. If Wheaton is disappointing and the offense is not very good, Coates could see some action

Last year, Bryant saw action because the offense was disappointing in the First 6 games of the season...And injuries can also happen

Wheaton had some big games last year and should only be even better. Injuries are the only way Coats will see more than a handful of balls.

It's really only injury. One guy in front of him going down, something that is certainly possible over a 16 game year, will get him a lot of playing time. Around 2/3 of the snaps.

It really just depends if he cuts down on his mistakes. If he is consistent in practice, he'll find playing time. Not a ton, but the goal of any coach is to get his most talented weapons on the field. Can run some 10 personnel with Coates to get him involved. Or occasionally spell Bryant with him, who really isn't going to be used to playing 1000 snaps over the course of the year. Never had to do it before. Not in Clemson or last year.

It's easy to say that now. But at the same time last year, not so much.
