Why Tajh Boyd will replace Landry Jones as the Steelers No. 3 Quarterback

When the Steelers picked up Tajh Boyd in free agency this offseason, the reason was they needed a young player to make more of an effort than Landry Jones has in the past two years he's been on the roster. Here's five reasons Tajh Boyd is the guy that will supplant Landry Jones as the 3rd quarterback on the roster.

Landry Jones was a fourth round draft pick in 2013 that looked like a prototypical pocket passer with a strong arm, but since he's been on the team, he hasn't shown much promise of being a worthy backup you would want in the game.

The Steelers saw the need to have Bruce Gradkowski in the playoffs this season when Ben Roethlisberger went down, and if Gradkowski were to get hurt the next option would have been the oft-inactive Jones, a player that if you watch his preseason tape, you would probably beg for Tommy Maddox return to the team.

While third string quarterback is one of the least pressing issues that any NFL team will have to consider, the Steelers have recognized the need to have a better third quarterback option than what Jones has been, and brought in some young competition to either replace Jones or make him improve his game. Here's five reasons why the result will be the former.

1) Landry Jones has fumbled in four of his six appearances on the field as a Steeler.

Jones' preseason numbers aren't impressive in the least, but one thing that his draft profile warned about was his lack of confidence in the pocket. Scouts made it a note that Jones would easily get rattled by pressure, even when it wasn't there, and how it would lead to mistakes. Boyd was able to avoid throwing an interception and didn't fumble once in his rookie preseason appearances. Jones' first play ever as a Steeler in his rookie preseason showed just that. Against the Giants and in front of the home crowd, Jones bobbled a snap at the four yard line, fumbled it backwards, only to recover it in the endzone and to be tackled for a safety.

2) Tajh Boyd is a better athlete.

Another one of the knocks against Jones was his lack of athleticism and how that might come back to bite him. While Boyd is no Michael Vick, or even Kordell Stewart, he can be more mobile than what Jones provides, which adds an extra dimension to his game. His college game shows he has a powerful arm that can zip short passes and boom long ones, even if a bunch of them aren't entirely accurate. What he brings to the table makes him a better option in this regard as well.

3) Landry Jones' best performance as a quarterback in the preseason was during a shutout.

Boyd is coming into the team looking for a job and if he ends up moving the Steelers' offense better than what Jones has shown over the past year, don't be surprised if he's the new third string quarterback going into the Steelers' season opener vs. the New England Patriots.

... and if Boyd is on our roster, don't be surprised if Landry Jones is the new third-string quarterback for the New England Patriots going into the season opener, and is cut the following Monday.

I'm hoping that we don't use a 3rd roster spot on a QB.

No QB is better than Landry Jones. We would do better just running the ball or doing fire drills rather than let him touch the ball.

How he has survived for two years on the roster let alone even getting drafted will always be a mystery to me.

BOTTOM LINE The NFL-sized pocket passer can be decisive and flashes the accuracy to pick apart defenses at the next level. However, his tendency to get rattled under pressure is a major issue. Also, when things start to go downhill, he lacks a short memory; his confidence is shaken. He is also inconsistent in his reads and decision making.

Bill Polian says Landry Jones is the best QB in the draft

Posted by Michael David Smith on April 19, 2013

https://nbcprofootballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/pg2_g_polian_300-e1341050965811.jpg?w=242

In the 1998 NFL draft, Colts General Manager Bill Polian had a decision to make: Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf? He chose right, and as a result his job in Indianapolis was safe as long Manning was there.

Now Polian is playing a different role, analyzing the draft for ESPN, and he was asked to pick the best quarterback in this year’s draft. Polian’s surprising answer? Oklahoma’s Landry Jones.

Polian said he attended the 2011 Oklahoma-Texas A&M game and watched Jones complete 18/38 passes for 255 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions, and Polian thought Jones compared favorably to Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who was last year’s No. 8 overall pick and is now the Dolphins’ starter.

“He was a good one, and when he had a good supporting cast around him, he was great,” Polian said of Jones. “I was at the game in Norman where he beat Tannehill head-to-head, in a very, very fierce wind. So this guy has been a winner, he’s got stature, he’s got arm strength — he can make all the throws. He sees the field quite well, and he’s a natural leader.”

Polian acknowledged that there are concerns about Jones, including his lack of mobility, and he said he doesn’t see a Peyton Manning in this year’s draft. But he thinks if there’s a quarterback who’s going to make an instant impact for an NFL team in 2013, it’s Jones.

To be fair to Jones and Polian, he hasn't had the chance to start for an NFL team and the others mentioned in the article are pretty terrible...what an ugly QB draft class...actually the 2013 draft in general wasn't something to jump for joy over...Steelers seemed to have make out the best with Bell...

Jones 4th round pick, 2013. Archer 3rd round pick, 2014.

Brown 6th round pick, ~2010. Beachum 7th round pick, ~2012.

You just never know.

There has a reason why Polian is now unemployed in the nfl.His drafts with the Colts in last few years have been mediocre.

But this is sure that the QB draft class in 2013 was brutal. The 2013 draft was brutal in general too.

*Read into that last quote what you wish, but it’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for a third-year player.

Time running out for Steelers' third-string quarterback Jones?

By Mark Kaboly
Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015

The Steelers used a fourth-round pick on quarterback Landry Jones not so he could be groomed to be Ben Roethlisberger's eventual replacement, but more to infuse some much-needed youth into an aging position.

At the time, it made sense.

Charlie Batch was 38, and Byron Leftwich was 32 and coming off shoulder and rib injuries.

Two years later, it's making a lot less sense.

Jones has been inactive for every game since being drafted in 2013 and hasn't advanced enough to beat out veteran Bruce Gradkowski as Roethlisberger's backup.

General manager Kevin Colbert isn't sure Jones ever will.

“Has he progressed to the point where he beat out Bruce as the No. 2? No,” Colbert said. “Maybe he will, maybe he won't. I think when you have young guys, at least they have that chance to grow.”

The Steelers have used mid-round picks before in hopes of finding a young and capable backup to Roethlisberger.

They drafted two other quarterbacks since Roethlisberger became their starter, both in the fifth round. Omar Jacobs was picked in 2006 and Dennis Dixon in 2008.

Neither worked out, and the Steelers moved on.

“If they grow, great. If they don't, then you look for others,” Colbert said.

That's not what you want to hear from a general manager who used a valuable pick on a backup quarterback when the team had gaping holes at a number of other positions.

But the Steelers aren't about to give up on Jones yet.

This does really bother me that much. From what I've seen Jones has no idea what is going on when he's on the field. I don't think he could pass on that much information.
