Owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle have retained the financial services firm Morgan Stanley to “explore their options,” which include selling all, some or none of their controlling interest in the National Hockey League franchise.

I knew the meltdown from the The Despres Trade would be the straw that broke the camels back

Well at least Mario got a swell house to go back to

Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux recently took possession of a new $20-million home in Mont Tremblant, Quebec's high end ski resort town.
The 15,000 square feet sprawling, Swiss castle-style mansion about 145 km north of Montreal has 23 rooms as well as 10 bathrooms.

Mario won't be pulling out entirely. He's owed too much money. Real fans know this. :coffee:

Oh, and your links didn't work when I clicked on them because you didn't post them correctly. Thanks for playing, though.

They should take the team public and sell 49% in the stock market like the Florida Panthers.

Lemieux was a reluctant owner when he bailed out the struggling organization back in 1999. That he’s maintained his stake this long is a bigger surprise than the news that he’s looking to cash out now.

And that’s really what this is about: Mario’s desire to take control of his finances and step back from a significant role as an owner. And the timing couldn’t be better. The Pens fill the building nightly and boast two of the game’s biggest draws. But both Crosby and Malkin are reaching the apex of their careers. When they begin their inevitable downward slide, so will the franchise.

Not that Lemieux will abandon ship. “Regardless of what happens, I plan on staying involved with the team in some capacity, and Ron and I plan to retain an ownership stake,” he said in a statement.

Good for him. And good for the Pens, who’ll stand to benefit from a new owner who is more interested in the day-to-day operations of the franchise than Mario has been of late.

Pens asking price, and could the sale heat up soon?

The Penguins are reportedly seeking a record $750 million for the sale of the team, according to a report in TSN on Wednesday afternoon.

A source said today that there currently appears to be more than one legitimate interested party interested in buying the Penguins who has gone through extensive due diligence, including participating in management meetings.

The same source said the sale may take a leap forward shortly after Labor Day

Flyers Fans Have Launched a GoFundMe Campaign to Buy the Penguins
A few months ago, word broke that Penguins owner, Mario Lemieux, was looking to sell the franchise that he bought in 1999 in order to maximize his return on equity value and interest rates. The Penguins are a much more valuable franchise today than when Lemieux took over sixteen years ago.

As this article on a Pittsburgh sports SB Nation blog states, Lemieux only bought the team as an investment, not exactly as the Messiah of Pittsburgh. It’s the same reason Joshua Harris and his bros bought the Sixers and Devils, essentially. Lemieux even tried selling the team back in 2006, and a deal was actually agreed upon before the other party rescinded their agreement.

Enter Flyers fans. The folks over at the OrangeAndBlackPack.com have started a GoFundMe campaign to raise $750 million to buy the Penguins.
