Steelers look to be more efficient near the end zone

June 1, 2015
By Ray Fittipaldo / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

When the Steelers took the field as a team for the first time in four months last week, the first team period of the first practice was dedicated to goal-line offense. The Steelers ran seven plays inside the 10, then broke off into their normal practice routine.

The significance of the drill was not lost on the team’s top offensive players. The Steelers ranked second in the league in total offense and passing offense in 2014, but they settled for field goals after many good drives because of an inefficient goal-line offense.

The Steelers were 28th in the league in touchdown percentage in goal-line offense. Red-zone offense (inside the 20) is the more popular statistic, but goal-line offense (inside the 10) gives a tighter snapshot of how teams operate when things are most condensed on the field.

The Steelers did not fare well the closer they got to the goal line, scoring 20 touchdowns on 74 snaps (27 percent) inside the 10. Houston led the league in touchdown percentage inside the 10, scoring on 22 of 49 opportunities (45 percent).

In short, the Steelers could drive the ball down the field better than any other team in the NFL, but they were not efficient at converting those drives into touchdowns. Despite being second in the league in total yards, the Steelers were only seventh in points scored.

Possibly the dumbest article of the offseason. Totally make believe...based on nothing. I hate when writers make up their own "stories."

I think stupid shit like this is probably why:

On a third-and-goal from the 4-yard line, Archer was part of a two-back look with Le'Veon Bell. Archer ran a swing out of the backfield, and Roethlisberger was sacked.

Which begs the question of WTF was Archer doing anywhere near the field in a goal-to-go situation in the first place? As the primary running option? At the short end of the field where grinding out yardage becomes hardest? Please - the dude goes down if someone breathes on him too heavily. To help block for Bell? Don't make me laugh. As an end zone target? Again, don't make me laugh. They may just as well have had 10 guys out there.

In a nutshell, this is Archer in a goal line offense (well, in the offense, period, so far, but ESPECIALLY goal line):

You can score all the TDs in shorts and 7-on-7 drills that you want, but if the boneheaded playcalling and personnel groupings inside the 10 doesn't change, I expect more of the same.

I hope Sandra Bullock's ex husband can make an impact in the Red Zone.

Having Bryant down at the goal line should help. Leveon is really good down there too and Heath is decent at using his body to block out defenders. It's been difficult in the past when every wr is under 6 ft tall. Now we have 2 tall wrs that should do well down there.

Another "highlight" of the Steelers' goal line offense last season (and which further illustrates my ealier point)...

Many things went wrong for the Pittsburgh Steelers during Sunday's loss to the New York Jets, including an attempt to score from the one-yard line in the fourth quarter. On first-and-goal from a yard away, linebacker James Harrison was in the game as a blocking tight end, and he appeared to be Ben Roethlisberger's target on a play that ended with an incompletion and a defensive penalty.

According to Roethlisberger, Harrison wasn't even supposed to be on the field, a recurring problem for the Steelers. The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback told Alan Robinson of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the team had issues getting the correct personnel on the field. Harrison, however, disagreed with the notion that he wasn't supposed to be on the field for the play.

...The Steelers settled for a field goal on the drive to cut the score to 20-6...

Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley focuses on red zone and run game

June 11, 2015
By Ray Fititpaldo/Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers broke the team record for most yards in a single season in 2014. Their 6,577 yards were 319 more than the record set in 1979. Running back LeVeon Bell and receiver Antonio Brown were named first-team All-Pro and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger set the team’s single-season passing mark and tied his team record with 32 touchdown passes.

The Steelers return every starter from that unit, a rarity in the free agency era of the NFL, and expectations will be for them to be among the best, if not the best, offense in the league in 2015.

In order for that to happen, offensive coordinator Todd Haley said his unit needs to improve in two areas: red-zone efficiency and the running game.

The Steelers were ranked 19th in red-zone efficiency last season.

Steelers haven't improved in the red zone at all. Barely got the one TD they did score.
