View Full Version : Who is the all-time Steelers' bad @ss?

I know many will cite Steelers from the Steel Curtain era to top this list, but I don't feel they necessary get top billing. Collectively, for sure. That was one of, if not THE best Ds of all time. Of course they had some baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad men on that unit. But when I think of what constitutes a "bad @ss" it goes beyond just quality play. To me, being a BA includes how hard the hit, how mean they are and how much their presence intimidates opponents. For instance, Jack Ham was a tremendous LB. But, I don't feel he is super high on the BA scale. Joey Porter was good at sacking the QB, but rarely did he blast them with hard hits. Here is my list.

1. Greg Lloyd. From the very first time I saw him, in the preseason, I could tell he was a total BA. If you pop a tape in from his games, you will notice that he seems to be in on every tackle, unless it's a long pass down field. Remember when he knocked out Favre with a single shot with his head? Lloyd was such a BA. Had he played with the 70's teams he might be the most memorable even on those teams. #95 was one mean dude.

2. James Harrison. Had he played earlier in his career, he might even be ahead of Lloyd on this list. It's like he was made in a test tube with the best DNA to play OLB. His hits are vicious. He is a baaaaaaaad man. He is so darn good the refs allow holding on most plays, because if they didn't, he have 30 sacks a year.

3. Jack Lambert. Was it John Elway who said, while seeing Jack across the line, that he'd likely change his career and become an accountant instead of having to face Jack. Another QB said his knees started to shake involuntarily when looking at Lambert across the line. Jack had an ash tray bolted to his locker.

4. Mean Joe Green.

5. Mel Blount.

I admit, I wasn't alive when the Steel Curtain ruled the roost, but I've watched the highlights and Jack Lambert always stole the show for me.

1. Jack
2. Greg
3. Mean Joe
4. Deebo
5. Joey (Disagree with OP's opinion on him, Joey was a total-package bad ass, but...)
6. Ryan Clark (...if you're looking for a hitter, some of Ryan's hits are the hardest I've ever seen)

Joey Porter was a bad ass...he was one of the few NFL players that could talk a mean game and back it up with authority. I would add him to my initial list and maybe take out Jeff Reed.

I would put Jeff Reed more into the "dumb ass" category than the "bad ass" one.

For this younger generation, watch how tackling should be done. Never mind the torpedo shots, head down and wrap up.

Jack Lambert
Joe Greene
Greg Lloyd
James Harrison

I think those are the top 4. The order is very debatable.

As for Porter, I think he was more of an annoying mouth than a badass.

There are several Steelers players that come to mind, and may even be at the top of a list of all-time top ten badasses in the NFL. Mean Joe Green...Mel Blount..Greg Lloyd...etc

But there is only one player that made opponants "find religion".

Jack Lambert.

He meets every criteria. He was a beast on the field and that persona follows him OFF the field to this day. Dont think so? Ask any reporter if they would like to drop by Jack's house for an interview reguest. Jack has NO tolerance for the self-serving and when he makes an appearance you can bet its on HIS terms.

"Jack's so mean, he doesn't even like himself." - Joe Greene

Pretty much says it all. And Lambert was one of the smallest guys on the field (at least weight-wise), even in his era.

It's a phrase now heard constantly, uttered by football traditionalists and frustrated fans of teams on defense throughout America every NFL Sunday.

"Quarterbacks should wear a dress."

However, before the quote became part of the popular armchair football vernacular, Jack Lambert created the wave by saying it for the first time.

In three separate seasons, Lambert hit Cleveland quarterback Brian Sipe as he was releasing the football. Each time, the Browns' bench cleared in attack of Lambert.

After the first incident in 1978, the linebacker met with commissioner Pete Rozelle.

"I asked him, 'How about the guys who came off the bench and mobbed me? Were they fined?' He said, 'No, but they got very strong warnings.'"

Howard Cosell interviewed Lambert on Monday Night Football, being sure to address the red button issue. Jack Lambert responded with the words that many angry football fans have spewed in mass:

Quarterbacks should wear dresses.

This was not the last time Lambert would be brazen in response to the issue of protecting quarterbacks.

After a 1981 hit on quarterback Brian Sipe of the Browns, Jack Lambert answered reporters' questions in the locker room.

"Dreith (the official calling the penalty) said I hit Sipe too hard," Lambert said.

"Did you?"

"I hit him as hard as I could."

Classic Jack, jack.

Three stories.

1) My buddy's wife wasn't a Steelers fan... until she saw Joey Porter with his shirt off. She got a Porter jersey that afternoon.

Does that make Porter badass? I don't know... but, his pecs have superpowers over women. So, he's got that going for him.

2) My other buddy is a life-long Chargers fan. But, he owns a Harrison jersey.

Does that make Harrison badass? I don't know... but, it does show that Harrison is widely respected.

3) When my brother was little, Jack Lambert used to scare the crap out of him. He would cry whenever they'd show Lambert's toothless smile on TV. So... obviously... I took the issue of Sports Illustrated that had Lambert on the front, and chased my brother around the house.

Does that make Lambert badass? I don't know... but, that issue of SI is still mounted on my father's wall.

Sorry to disagree, but J-Peezy just didn't bring the lumber like Lloyd. I would love to see a LB core of Lloyd and Harrison on outside, Lambert in the middle and it wouldn't matter who the 4th LB was; it could Jerry O for all I care, and that unit would just destroy offenses.

I'd really like to know what he thinks of the QB protection rules nowadays...
