The Steelers lost out on one player, maybe two who might have helped their secondary Wednesday. They reportedly put in a claim for safety D.J. Swearinger, a 2013 second-round draft choice waived by Houston. So did seven other teams and Tampa Bay, highest on the waiver pecking list, was awarded Swearinger.

Then, the Baltimore Ravens signed veteran cornerback Kyle Arrington, 28, surprisingly released by New England. Arrington was to earn a $3 million salary with the Patriots, who reportedly wanted to lower it. Instead, a team that is weak at the position lost one who had played six years. Maybe the Steelers had no interest or felt he was not worth the price, I’m not sure. But their chief competitors did and landed him. Arrington, who comes from the Baltimore area, signed a three-year deal...........

I would've liked to give Swearinger a try...

Cripes - the Thursday night opener is fixing to have a basketball-like score...

How nice would it be for Ben to start off with 5 TDs and 500 yards in Foxboro? And we keep Garappolo to 4 TDs and 400 yards.

Does Garappolo have to do that well?

I agree. I'd like to see him do a whole lot worse, with a few picks thrown in.

Right before he's knocked out for the season, by a non-flagged legal duo hit. Javis Jones from one side, Bud Dupree from the other.

I'd rather see him be terrible, and then at halftime gets knocked out from being run over by a golf cart driven by the punter, who's high on PCP.

Maybe he plays well enough(in a losing effort) that ole Tommy boy gets benched a few more games. Tom would get to throw one of those hissy fit interviews like Bledsoe did when Brady sat him down.

No, but I am unsure about our secondary. Hoping we can just keep ahead of them on the scoresheet.

That will never happen with the Steelers playing the Cheats**....Bobby Kraftgate would cry.

No, no, you're going about this all wrong. We don't want them to have a QB that's any good. I hope Garappolo sucks worse than any QB ever, and Brady doesn't come back for some other reason, like he ruptures his intestine in a farting contest with the equipment manager while he's trying force out the big ones. Then they draft 100 QBs in a row who suck ass. That's what you want for the Patriots.

SteelByDesign: Reports are that the Steelers made a claim on DJ Swearinger. Is this any indication that they're not all that confident in Mitchell or Thomas?

Ray Fittipaldo: Swearinger is more of a strong safety than a free safety so I would say it speaks more to their concern about Thomas, which is understandable because he hasn't done it yet. Swearinger has been a starter in the league. Thomas has not although I wouldn't necessarily view it as they are completely dissatisfied with Thomas as much as they were trying to upgrade their talent at the position.

Walt Hous: Swearinger was literally one of the worst safeties in the league last year. Is he a case of fans thinking Free Agents are all great? Why chose him over what we have?

Ray Fittipaldo: He was a high draft pick and teams might figure they could work with him. The Steelers weren't the only team to put in a waiver claim. Seven other teams did as well.

Air Brady: Ray The Steelers Seem to be a Sharmarko Thomas Injury away from Being in tatters at . What would they do then?

Ray Fittipaldo: Will Allen was re-signed. They seem very comfortable with him as a short-term replacement.
