In past years the NFL’s compensatory system for rewarding teams who lost more free agents than they signed, had a cut off date of June 1st. Free agents signed after that date did not count against each teams tally when allocating additional picks in the following years draft.

This year it appears the NFL has had a change of mind, with the league announcing that date has been moved forward to Tuesday 12th May … tomorrow in other words.

For teams like the Baltimore Ravens, who seem to have made a living out of collecting extra compensatory picks each year, that fact seems to weigh heavily in the decision on whether to sign a free agent or not before this date.

As it stands the Steelers will earn one extra selection in the 2016 draft for the loss of Brice McCain to the Miami Dolphins. Given the size and length of the contract he signed it would be a surprise if the return was much more than a 7th, possibly 6th round draft pick. In case you had forgotten DeAngelo Williams, the Steelers only free agent signing, was cut by the Carolina Panthers. As such he is not an expired contract free agent signing and does not count in the calculation process.

On the face of it not a lot for the team to have worried about, in terms of putting them off making a free agent signing, but for many teams tomorrow will be a significant date in terms of round two of NFL free agency.

With the draft behind them any franchise with notable holes still on their roster may be forced to get back into the free agency game this week, or risk losing out on a player they had marked as a potential signing when training camp opens later in June.

Report: Eight teams attempted to add D.J. Swearinger on waivers

Posted by Mike Wilkening on May 13, 2015

The Texans’ decision to waive 2013 second-round pick D.J. Swearinger on Monday didn’t exactly scare off clubs from wanting to bring in the third-year safety from South Carolina.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, eight teams tried to claim Swearinger, who ultimately landed with Tampa Bay on Tuesday. In addition to the Jets, the Jaguars, Raiders, Falcons, Bills, Steelers and Ravens were all willing to be assigned his contract.

The Steelers’ claim for Swearinger shouldn’t come as a surprise; the team has a need at safety, and head coach Mike Tomlin praised Swearinger’s play before last season’s Steelers-Texans matchup. Likewise, the Jets, Jaguars, Raiders, Falcons, Bills and Ravens could also use another option or two at safety.

Nevertheless, the Buccaneers were first in line. And now, Swearinger gets a chance to see if his second NFL home works out better than his first.

I definitely would've liked to kick the tires on him. He would've been great depth and a possible starter. Plenty of experience...would've been nice.
