NFL Draft 2015: B.J. Finney undrafted, to sign with Steelers

By Jon Morse on May 2, 2015

Kellis Robinett @KellisRobinett -

B.J. Finney says the Steelers promised him a shot to start at guard. Pittsburgh is his favorite team. Fighting back tears as he explains.

Per Kellis Robinett, who's done a fantastic job covering B.J. Finney's waiting process this weekend and who will likely have a must-read story later, the Wildcat center has agreed to a free-agent deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Finney, one of the greatest stories in K-State history, will probably shift to guard for the Steelers, who already have Pro Bowler Maurkice Pouncey handling snaps. Finney's journey from a walk-on who only had the financial resources to pay his way for one year to try and earn his scholarship to a four-year starter at center for the Wildcats is well-documented, and honestly says more about him than any technical draftnik profile can.

Indeed, is there any matchup of player and organizational personality better than B.J. Finney and the no-nonsense, hard-working, everyman brand of the Pittsburgh Steelers? It's hard to imagine. If you missed our pre-draft breakdown on Finney, correct that mistake, and also be sure to check out our colleagues at Behind the Steel Curtain in the coming days for their reaction.

Dieffenbach is a kid that might have gone in the middle round if not for his injuries, glad we are taking a flyer on the kid. I'm a little surprised Finney didn't get drafted. Clear could be shifted to OT if he can put on some bulk. Don't know a thing about Whimpey but love the name. Guess they were listening when I asked to an O-lineman.

Tyler Murphy was a QB at Boston College...looks like a conversion project as they have him listed as a WR.

I was hoping they would offer LSU tackle Collins a contract

Collins is waiting until he is cleared to accept any contract. He'll actually be better off accepting the free agent deal, which is usually three years, than being drafted...and he gets to basically pick his team.

Here’s a closer look at each player:

TE Cameron Clear (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/3044687/cameron-clear): Clear's 6-foot-6, 277-pound frame allows him to try out tackle if tight end doesn’t work out. The athleticism is there, but an abundance of quality game film, after nine career catches in a pass-frequent offense, is not.

DT Nigel Crawford: Getting the NFL’s attention is difficult when playing for Saint Augustine’s University in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, but the Steelers noticed Crawford’s average of 1.36 tackles for a loss per game last year. Crawford has ideal run-clogging size at 6-4, 307.

DE Dominique Davis (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2575185/dominique-davis): The Liberty defensive lineman from Buffalo, New York, played at 6-5, 285 pounds last year (up from 240 as a freshman), lending possible flexibility to play tackle or end. In 14 games as a senior, Davis had 61 tackles -- 12 for a loss -- and 7.5 sacks.

OG Miles Dieffenbach (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2515539/miles-dieffenbach): Penn State suffered a blow when Dieffenbach, starter of 23 games from 2012-13, tore an ACL last offseason. Dieffenbach didn’t reach the final stages of recovery until late October, so his ability should not be judged on 2014, but his potential moving forward.

OG Reese Dismukes (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2574567/reese-dismukes): Dismukes has big-time credentials in the SEC and could be considered a surprise undrafted free agent. He played in or started 50 games for Auburn, becoming an All-American and winning the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s best center. Explosion and athleticism will be question marks at the NFL level.

C B.J. Finney (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/501293/bj-finney): Quintessential Kansas State guy, using technique and toughness to go from walk-on to 52-game starter for the Big 12 team. Three-time captain has adequate size at 6-4 and 318 pounds, but scouting reports say he has short arms.

QB/WR Tyler Murphy (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2516059/tyler-murphy): Has the athleticism to convert to a skill position, leading Boston College to a seven-win season with an ACC-record 1,079 rushing yards from the quarterback position. The Florida Gators (http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/57/florida-gators) transfer completed 120-of-211 passes for 1,526 yards, 11 scores and 10 interceptions. Boston College coaches are high on Murphy's character.

DE Bradon Prate (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2508081/bradon-prate): Prate recorded 62 tackles, 12.5 for a loss, along with 7.5 sacks for Illinois State. Has ideal edge-rush size at 6-4, 265.

OG Collin Rahrig (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/500613/collin-rahrig): Showed ability to handle interior rushers in pass protection while at Indiana but is fighting the size battle – he’s listed at 6-2 and 285 pounds, which is too small for an NFL guard. The team captain started 36 games. He’s a smart player who will need to sell Pittsburgh on guard-center versatility.

WR Eli Rogers (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/2576643/type/college/eli-rogers): Was productive in four seasons at Louisville but never broke out. His highest receiving total for a season was 536 yards, his lowest 454. The 5-foot-10 Rogers likely will compete in the slot. Ability to create separation from defensive backs will be a question.

RB Ross Scheuerman (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/2568756/type/college/ross-scheuerman): The 6-foot, 204-pound Scheuerman was often a must-watch player for Lafayette College, producing 3,504 and 31 touchdowns in four seasons, including a resounding 304 yards and three scores in Yankee Stadium for The Rivalry against Lehigh.

[/SIZE]OT Kevin Whimpey (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/380130/kevin-whimpey): Whimpey started 40 games for Utah State over three years, earning All-Mountain West first-team honors in 2014. Led the Aggies with 64 knockdowns. Coach Matt Wells (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2516295/matt-wells) says Whimpey benches nearly 500 pounds. Goodness.

Finney is truly living the dream

By Mike Prisuta

B.J. Finney was a Steelers fan, and now he's an undrafted rookie fighting for a roster spot.

B.J. Finney had been through the Pittsburgh airport once previously, a couple of seasons back when his Kansas State Wildcats flew in to play at West Virginia.

This time, he made certain to commemorate the occasion.

“I took a picture with Franco Harris’ statue,” Finney proudly reported upon completion of the first practice of Rookie Minicamp. “That was Item No. 1 on the list, so I did it and I sent it to my family.

Why Undrafted?:
Reese Dismukes, C, Auburn

By Charlie Campbell

After the end of the 2014 season and in the beginning of the draft process, there were a lot of projections of Auburn center Reese Dismukes being one of the top centers in the 2015 NFL Draft. Dismukes had a successful run as the Tigers' starting center for 50 games. He was a key part of Auburn's potent rushing attack the past two seasons and was considered a smart, well-rounded player. Thus, it was surprising to some when Dismukes went undrafted despite seven centers being selected in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Sources say the reason that Dismukes went undrafted was because teams felt that Dismukes would not be a positive presence in their locker rooms. Dismukes is said to dislike certain portions of the team and segments of teammates who are in every NFL locker room. Teams didn't want to draft a player who they felt would cause problems in their locker room and divisions among the players. In the end, every team passed on Dismukes multiple times despite a good college career.

After going undrafted, Dismukes signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Obviously, competing for the starting position is out of the question considering the Steelers have one of the best centers in the NFL in Maurkice Pouncey. Dismukes will compete for a backup job, but that won't be easy for him to earn because he isn't a player who is viewed as a versatile game-day backup to move to guard or tackle if there is an injury. With NFL teams only dressing three backups at most, they want those backups to have versatility.

Most likely, Dismukes will have to hope that he is so much better than the other backups that he forces the Steelers to either keep him as Pouncey's backup or put him on the practice squad. If Dismukes plays well in the preseason games, another team could snatch him up if the Steelers cut him. Most important thing for Dismukes is him making a good impression on Mike Tomlin, so Tomlin would be willing to recommend him to another team if he is cut. Dismukes needs to show that the criticisms that led him to going undrafted are not true and he won't be a problem in NFL locker rooms.

Which could mean anything. Perhaps he doesn't like the cocky punks who infect locker rooms. If that's the case then I agree with Dismukes.

* It’s always interesting to look over the group of undrafted rookies signed by the Steelers, and only partly because there always seem to be a few of them with interesting stories in their past. But the real reason for not immediately kissing these guys off as nothing more than cannon fodder is the Steelers’ history of giving them real opportunities to make the roster and then make an impact.

* Since 2001, here is a partial list of some of the Steelers’ notable undrafted rookies: Chris Hoke, Keydrick Vincent, James Harrison, Willie Parker, Nate Washington, Greg Warren, Anthony Madison, Darnell Stapleton, Patrick Bailey, Doug Legursky, Ramon Foster, Isaac Redman, and Robert Golden.

* From the 2015 group, here are a few names to remember while sitting on a hillside during another steamy afternoon at Saint Vincent College: Cameron Clear is a 6-foot-5, 277-pound tight end from Texas A&M, who has the look of a guy who might be able to develop into a tight end capable of handling himself on an NFL line of scrimmage; and Miles Dieffenbach, Reese Dismukes, and B.J. Finney all are interior offensive linemen who could have been draft picks.

* Dieffenbach was a full-time starter at guard until he tore his ACL in March 2014, and it was the lingering aftermath of the injury that dropped him from being a Saturday afternoon draft pick to the status of rookie free agent. Dismukes had 50 starts at Auburn and was a two-time team captain, and maybe he wasn’t drafted for some of the same reasons Legursky wasn’t – a bit on the smallish side to handle the Haloti Ngatas of the world who will be lining up on his nose in the NFL. Finney started all 39 games at center from 2012-14 and was a three-time team captain at Kansas State.

* While it seems as though Clear will have a difficult path to a roster spot, what with Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, Rob Blanchflower, and rookie Jesse James in front of him, the three interior offensive linemen seem to have a more friendly depth chart working in their favor.

* Besides starters Maurkice Pouncey, Ramon Foster, and David DeCastro, the returning interior offensive linemen include just Cody Wallace and Chris Hubbard.
