Throw a curveball to Senquez Golson, and he has no answer for it.

In fact, that's what ended his baseball dream — a dream that originally had him turn down a signing bonus of more than $1 million from the Boston Red Sox four years ago.

Now, toss a 6-foot-4 speedy receiver his way, and that's no problem at all — not even for a guy who is not quite 5-9.

The Steelers addressed their biggest need of cornerback with one of the smallest players in the second round during Day 2 of the NFL Draft on Friday when they selected the Mississippi cornerback 56th overall.

“At this point in the draft, we were looking for someone for exceptional skills,” secondary coach Carnell Lake said. “When you have three key players leave (Troy Polamalu, Ike Taylor, Brice McCain), you need to replace those people, so in that sense it was a need.”

Indeed it was a great need, and a long time coming.

Golson is the Steelers' highest-drafted cornerback since they took Ricardo Colclough with the 38th pick in the 2004 draft. The Steelers used a second-round pick on Bryant McFadden (62nd overall) in 2005, but since then, the Steelers have shied away from cornerbacks early in the draft.

This year, they had no choice but to address the position early in the draft.

William Gay, Cortez Allen and Antwon Blake are the only returning corners that have experience, with Blake's being limited and Allen being benched midway through last year.

The Steelers believed Golson, who was being projected by many as either a third- or fourth-round pick, was too good to pass up despite being short for a cornerback.

“If he had been 2 inches taller, we probably wouldn't have gotten him,” Lake said. “He probably would've gone high in the first round. If he were taller, people would've jumped on him right away. He is going to be challenged, there is no question about that. If you are 6-2, they are still going to throw at you or if you are 5-8, they are going throw at you.”
