That iconic over-the-shoulder catch that helped the Steelers win Super Bowl XL, those franchise-record 1,000 receptions, all of those bone-jarring blocks that intimidated opposing players and fostered change in the NFL rulebook. None of those Hines Ward moments would have happened for the Steelers if not for the advent of compensatory draft picks.


Compensatory picks were introduced in 1994 to help teams offset the loss of free agents from the previous year. Ward came along in the third round of the 1998 draft, but only after the Steelers lost some important free agents to other teams the previous spring..........
