Troy Polamalu called Dan Rooney last night to inform him he was retiring from football.
The Steelers had asked Polamalu to retire in February, but he resisted until the realization came upon him in church this week, the Holy Week of the Greek Orthodox Church.

Troy Polamalu (http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/player/troy-polamalu/140433), whose iconic long hair roamed the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers-team)' defensive backfield for 12 seasons, is retiring, according to a report on Scout.com (http://pit.scout.com/story/1536060-steelers-great-troy-polamalu-retires?s=68).

The report says Polamalu has informed the Steelers of his decision. He was an eight-time Pro-Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro. He announced his decision in a phone interview with Scout.

Polamalu had a big impact on the defense of the Steelers in his prime...From 2008 to 2010, when he was out, the Steelers were very average, when he played the Steelers were in the elite of the NFL and the Steelers have participated in two Super Bowl

Between his two years (2009), Polamalu has missed 11 games and the steelers missed the playoffs ....He had a huge impact on the steelers

Thank you Troy for 12 amazing years. Should be inducted into Canton in 2020

The most surprising item in that article was that Polamalu made 8 tackles in the playoff game.

I'm glad he came to the decision the way he did. He will retire with dignity and without compromise. You think Canton will be overrun with black & gold this year? Just wait until his induction.

What a tremendous role model.

I hope he remains engaged with the team in some capacity.

I think Ed Reed retired last week? Not sure if it was a April fools joke but if not both of these men will be entering the hall of fame together in 5 years

How about that for a hall of fame class

2 arguably of the best 5 Safeties in NFL history ( Lott , Tatum , Atwater ) comprise the other 3 IMO Donnie shell could arguably be in place of Jack Tatum but still not in the HoF

mind you I am biased towards guys I have actually seen play the game

Troy was a one-of-a-kind player who made some of the most exciting plays we will ever see. Will never forget him leaping over the line of scrimmage to make super human tackles. His timing was INCREDIBLE!!! Will also never forget his interception that and subsequent return to send us to Super Bowl 43.

Troy will be missed and remembered fondly by all of Steeler Universe. Good Luck Troy!!!!

I echo everyone's sentiments regarding Super Troy. He is a Steelers legend and it truly is the end of a wonderful era.

I believe Troy made the right decision, in the right way, and for the right reasons. His wife seems like such a lovely woman and will be by his side to support him. They are very lucky to have each other.

Thanks for the wonderful memories, Troy! You are the epitome of what a Pittsburgh Steeler should be and are loved and will be missed by many. Good luck, best wishes, and God bless you on whatever journey you take in the future.

steelers.com has really dropped the ball on this IMO , nothing there about the retirement ( not a word ) where as IMO by now they should have a tribute of Troy through the years but not a single word ..........

they need to fire the entire staff and start over they have missed the boat on far to many things and now this ...

It's been a running joke for years that the Steelers have the worst "official" website in the league. That reputation is well-earned. This is a retirement on a Joe Greene/Jack Lambert level, not a Jason Worilds.

Yeah...agree. It's really bullshit. Anyone know a contact to write to for that? I'm not one to write and complain but the announcement was made last night....still nothing in the morning on the website about him? Please...that's just fucking terrible...

Vaya con Dios, Amigo.

I was actually hoping he'd play one more year. I think our safety situation is precarious, and, at this point, who gives a shit about cap room. Not like there's anyone out there left to get anyway.

The best description of Troy I've ever heard, I heard this morning on NFL AM:

"Artfully destructive." That's awesome. I didn't catch who said it.

Man, saw it coming like everyone else but still makes you give a moment of silence for once-in-a-generation player and a star human being at that. One of the all-time greats at his position.

Thanks for all the incredible memories, Troy! You'll be missed.

Selfishly, I think he could have played another season or two if he'd drop about 25 lbs. But my non selfish self is glad that he one, retiring a Steeler and two, retired before concussions made him go nuts like several former NFL players. Troy had them in college and I can't even count how many he had with us. His shoulder tackling style left him susceptible to more of them too.

Good luck to a Godly man off the field, but a demon on it! You will be missed Troy.

I think Troy's tackling style can best be described as hurling his body full speed at the ballcarrier with total disregard for his own physical well being.

It's too bad it had to end like this.

Hopefully it does end like this, and not in Cardinals red.
