back on topic though. what was the point of picking up the 5th year option early? I didnt even know that was possible until today

I believe you have to activate the fifth-year option before the start of the fourth year or lose it. The players didn't want to be going into a totally uncertain maybe-last-year of their contract. I don't know whether it's better for us if we sign him now or wait until late if th option year would be cheaper. Seems like we want to keep him long-term though, which would be wise.
