PHOENIX, Ariz. -- With the league's coaches spending the past two days meeting with the media here at the NFL Meetings, it struck me as a good time to rank the coaches from top to bottom.

It is not an easy thing to do.

There were a lot of tough decisions, but the easiest was picking the top guy. That is New England's Bill Belichick, who is arguably the best ever. Belichick won his fourth Super Bowl in February, joining Pittsburgh's Chuck Noll as the only men to do so. Belichick has been to six, the most of any coach.

Forget the Spygate talk and the Deflate-gate talk, as well as his prickly persona. This is a man who was born to coach and does it as well as anybody in the history of the game.

Belichick is a clear No. 1.

The rest of the list was a battle of sorts. I decided to put the three first-time coaches together at the bottom because it's unfair to judge them without any history. They are Dan Quinn of the Falcons, Todd Bowles of the Jets and Jim Tomsula of the 49ers. That's only fair.

So here's the list:

Not to mention this:

The New England Patriots took advantage of the rules to beat the Baltimore Ravens in the postseason. On Wednesday, the NFL changed the rules.

The Patriots ran some four-man lines where running back Shane Vereen was on the line but ineligible and tight end Michael Hoomanawanui eligible despite lined up at what looked like a left tackle position. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh cried foul, and the league listened — now, but not then. (Harbaugh was assessed a 15-yard penalty for delay of game at the time.)

The rule has been changed as such: A player with an eligible receiver’s number (Nos. 1-49 and 80-89) must line up within the tackle box; if they line up incorrectly, a 5-yard penalty for illegal substitution will be levied.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft was asked about the plays on Monday and denied that the team did anything shady or illegal, saying merely that Bill Belichick was coaching within the NFL rules of the time.

Wasn't shady or illegal, but it was definitely bush league.

Forget the Spygate talk and the Deflate-gate talk...

What about practicing players on IR (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3408450)? What about monkeying around with the scoreboard at a critical juncture of a playoff game (http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4715919/scoreboard-error-to-blame-for-cundiff-miss)?

Mmmm...no. I won't forget about it. He's a cheating POS and always will be in my eyes. Nothing more.

Lists are always a sham ...

Great Coordinators make great Head coaches more often than any other thing IMO

show me any great head coach and I will show you 2 very competent Coordinators

Tomlin has flaws no doubt (how we lost to the Bucs and Jets is beyond me) but he definitely impressed me this year the way he was able to right the ship and get to 11 wins after starting out 3-3 then come back from 1.5 games down with 4 games to go to win when things were going sour again that was impressive too (even if it was at the expense of the Bungals). I think this team would have went to the AFC Championship game if it weren't for Reggie Nelson injuring Le'Veon

Vince Lombardi, Chuck Noll or Bill Walsh would have never pulled those stunts.

How do I know this article is absolute bone-headed stupidity? Marv Lewis is ranked above Jason Garrett.

In 12 years Marvin Lewis is just barely over .500 and has NEVER won a playoff game. In 6 years Garrett HAS won a playoff game and has Never had a losing season.

I don't understand why any Cleveland Browns coach isn't ranked last because, you know, Cleveland...

A Cleveland coach automaticly gets 20 points just for having the guts to show up for work.
