Huge contract for Big Ben shows value of top quarterbacks

Ben Roethlisberger’s new contract will not burden the Steelers by using up so much salary cap over the next five years that it will prevent them from signing others.

Although that is a popular opinion in some quarters, if that were the case, what’s the point of having a good to great quarterback? All the good ones get paid big money and somehow those franchises manage to field Super Bowl contenders.

What is more burdensome for the Steelers this year, Roethlisberger’s cap hit of $17.245 million — down more than a million after he signed his new contract — or LaMarr Woodley’s cap charge of $8.58 million? Roethlisberger’s cap rises to $23.95 million next year, settles back to $18.2 million in 2017 and then evens out to $23.2 million in both 2018 and 2019. His cap rises by $6.7 million next year, when the salary cap for each team is expected to balloon again, perhaps by another $10 million. They won’t have to account for Woodley in 2016, when they should have a much larger carryover in cap space from this year to next.

No problem.

If you want your quarterback to be paid less, go get the kind Cleveland has had the past 30 years and you won’t need to worry about it. All the good and great quarterbacks get paid the going rate, and those are the ones who usually lead their teams to the Super Bowl.
