The Steelers began answering questions that have lingered over their free agency plans for weeks but left many more unanswered and added some mystery to what might become their biggest story of all.

With the start of free agency set to begin at 4 p.m. today, the Steelers Monday afternoon released veteran defensive end Brett Keisel and kept two of their own players off the market.

They signed linebacker Arthur Moats to a three-year, $7.5 million contract (including $1.9 million to sign) and tight end Matt Spaeth to a two-year deal.

They also tendered one-year, $1,542,000 contracts to all three of their restricted free agents — cornerback Antwon Blake, safety Robert Golden and fullback Will Johnson.

Left unanswered are their plans for Troy Polamalu, whether they can re-sign linebacker Jason Worilds and what other free agents they might go after from other teams.

The Steelers had an estimated $7 million of salary cap room entering the day but reduced that considerably with their two signings and the three RFA contract tenders, although they got some back when they wiped Keisel’s $1.5 million salary from their books. They can create more room once they extend the contracts of Ben Roethlisberger and Cameron Heyward, and they also could restructure more existing contracts.
