News/views: Steelers add to QB mix (http://dkonpittsburghsports.com/2015/03/06/newsviews-steelers-add-to-qb-mix/)

News: The Steelers have signed (https://twitter.com/Rand_Getlin?original_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fpit.247s ports.com%2FBolt%2FReport-Steelers-sign-QB-Tajh-Boyd-36030437&tw_i=573889801977532417&tw_p=tweetembed) Tajh Boyd, a quarterback the Jets cut loose shortly after drafting him last summer, to battle for backup duty.

Views: In and of itself, this isn’t significant. If one can’t make the Jets’ QB depth chart, one might not make a CFL depth chart.

At the same time, it’s yet another sign that Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert aren’t satisfied with the current backups, Bruce Gradkowski and especially Landry Jones, and are would prefer to see better quality below Ben Roethlisberger. Gradkowski is an unrestricted free agent, and I’ll be surprised if he isn’t brought back. But Jones has impressed absolutely no one and won’t simply be handed No. 3 again.

Here are Boyd’s collegiate stats (http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/tajh-boyd-1.html) at Clemson.

Steelers sign former ACC Player of the Year Boyd for QB depth

The Steelers signed former Clemson quarterback and 2012 ACC Player of the Year Tajh Boyd on Friday to a one-year contract.

Boyd (6-foot-1, 225 pounds) was drafted in the sixth round in 2014 by the N.Y. Jets but was cut after the final preseason game.

Boyd went on to play for the Florida Blacktips and the Boston Brawler of the Fall Experimental Football League. Boyd completed 58 percent of his passes in five starts with the Brawlers, throwing for 713 yards and six touchdowns with one interception.

Boyd will compete with third-string quarterback Landry Jones for a roster spot. Jones, the Steelers' fourth-round pick in 2013 out of Oklahoma, has not been active for a game in two seasons. Also, backup Bruce Gradkowski is in the final year of his three-year contract he signed in 2013.

The Steelers prefer to go into spring practices and training camp with four quarterbacks on the roster.

He is a camp arm, pure and simple. If he beats out Jones to be the 3rd QB, so what? They would better off keeping just two QBs, and dealing with any injury emergency that might occur by signing a street free agent. If #7 goes down for any length of time, the season is over anyway.

We know Jones has nothing. I'd be willing to take this guy over him sight unseen, because who knows, he may be better, but he sure as hell can't be much worse.

Just let him run a 3 wide offense and he'll bring us a 7th Lombardi...

Ex-Clemson star Tajh Boyd tries to restart his career with Steelers

May 9, 2015
By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

It is easy to understand what drove Tajh Boyd to that parking lot in suburban Boston last fall, down on himself and his football career.

He had been on top of the world at Clemson University. He was the three-year starting quarterback of the high-flying Tigers offense: First team All-American, ACC player of the year, bowl game MVP, ACC touchdown-pass record, gifted with a golden right arm that could bring down the Goodyear Blimp and the ability to make plays on the run.

So how did Tajh Boyd find himself in and around Marlborough, Mass., playing football for something called the Boston Brawlers last fall?

“The name sounds like something from ‘Any Given Sunday,’ ” Boyd cracked after leading his first practice at Steelers rookie camp Friday.

The fall came fast and hard and mostly was not his doing...
