The Pittsburgh Steelers continued to clear needed cap space on Wednesday, restructuring the contracts of safety Mike Mitchell (http://247sports.com/Player/Mike-Mitchell-44343) and center Maurkice Pouncey (http://247sports.com/Player/Maurkice-Pouncey-53891).

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported the restructuring of Mitchell and Pouncey's contracts, along with the previously reported restructuring of Marcus Gilbert's contract, will free up $9.5 million in cap space.

Something is up. Are we making a run for one of the big free agents? Hope it's Houston.

Don't forget that they are working on a new contract with Ben.

I was kinda wondering the same thing. We should be safely under the cap by a fair amount. Add in the extra savings from releasing Moore, Mr. Dirty Dick, and possibly Troy [emoji22], maybe Keisel, and with Ben's new contract being a little more cap friendly, and we could POTENTIALLY be actual players in free agency. I'll believe it when I see it, but still.

they must believe in Mitchell far more than me ... his contract was nearly bullet proof after this season prior to reworking his deal ... now it wont be

guess they have not learned from History ... when you fail to learn from it you are doomed to repeat it ....

hope they are not making a run at Lamar Woodley ( hides from the tomatoes and eggs thrown in this direction )

The Steelers are content to look for help at the position in free agency and the draft even though Jarvis Jones (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/15799/jarvis-jones) is the only outside linebacker on the roster who is signed for 2015 and has NFL experience.

A deal with Ben could open up more cap space...

Or maybe they have learned from history. Ryan Clark was pretty terrible in his first year with the Steelers...

was referring to restructures hurting the long term viability of retaining players and making additions in FA when needed and being the primary reason we have been in cap hell

could make a run at some middle FA.. like a Jordan Cameron.. maybe make a run at bush even tho unlikely and then pick up an olb and cb with all this extra $$$... or they bringing back mike Wallace LOL

From what I understand Mitchell's restructuring only adds a cap hit of 825,000. So it might not be as bad as we think. I still think he is better than we saw this past season. As for the clearing of money I think its for Ben's new deal. Plus remember we are still cutting Lance Moore, which frees up 1.5 million.

If you figure 7 million or so for the draft class. All the internal free agents they are said to be interested in (Moats, some of the corners, etc) there is not really any money left from that 9.5 million.

Kevin Colbert wants to add a free agent corner.

They have the cap room to do it. Cap hell is over after 2015.

Once Ben gets his new contract, I would imagine his cap hit will actually be less than what it is now. I think Brett, Troy, dirty dick, and Lance will all be gone. That's a hell of a lot of money freed up beyond what they have.

Ben's cap hit will probably go down no more than $5 mil if they extend him.

I'd like for the Steelers to get Pernell McPhee or Jabaal Sheard

Both of those gentlemen will cost Jason Worilds level money.

Maybe McPhee might justify that type of investment, but Sheard and his recent inability to rush the passer likely will not.

Steelers are $8 mil under.

Keisel and Moore free up $3 mil.

Cam Thomas $2 mil.

Troy would be $6 mil.

Ben would be at least $4 mil.

So they have room to make a big move. I would go a free agent corner for a big move, and keep Moats at OLB if Harrison is gone.

He has to get better. Can't get much worse, imo. Even when he did something good, he took a bad fvckin penalty.

He wasn't terrible when Troy was absent from the line up.

I guess they never officially restructured Pouncey's contract yet. It's done now.

What the shit? Seems like I missed a lot of stupidity by the front office during my month off. We're finally getting the cap situation under control, we're finally almost out from under all the restructure bullcrap, and we're giving out contracts where you can keep or get rid of players without eight-figure dead money ... so what do we do? More of the same stupid shit. In a year where we didn't even really NEED to do it that badly. It's almost like Colbert and/or Khan feel compelled to restructure contracts every year because restructuring makes you look smart.

Ugh. Can we get a new GM yet, or do we have to go through another 5-year cycle of draft reaches and free agents walking? This is stupid.

What I suspect will happen is we'll restructure it twice, and in the final year we have the choice of keeping him and taking a $18M cap hit, or cutting him and eating $8M in dead money.

ha-yup. Looks like we're right on track.
