Wide receiver Lance Moore (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/9400/lance-moore), unhappy with his playing time, has asked the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/pit/pittsburgh-steelers) to release him from his contract, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Monday.

The Steelers will absorb a minimal cap hit ($322,500) in 2015 if they release the 31-year-old Moore, who had signed a two-year, $3 million deal with Pittsburgh last March.

The nine-year veteran, just two years removed from a 1,000-yard season, rarely had more than a bit role in the offense in 2014, catching just 14 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns.

"It didn't go the way I'd hoped it would go, but that's life in the NFL sometimes," Moore said on Jan. 5 after the Steelers were eliminated in an AFC wild-card game. "It's unfortunate that it unfolded the way that it did, but I enjoyed my time here this season.

"I just want to play ... whether that's here or somewhere else. I'd love to be here, I'd love to be a part of this offense, but I think those are decisions that have to be made down the line."

Can't say I blame him, I put this one on Mike Tomlin.

I don't. He was no replacement for Cotchery.

Lance Moore is an average receiver at best at this point in his NFL career. The Saints let him walk because younger cheaper players crowded him off the roster.

Now the Steelers may do the same thing. The emergence of Wheaton and in particular Bryant, means that Moore is a $1 million or luxury item that the Steelers don't need. Savvy veteran #4 receivers are about a dime a dozen.

I agree on that. But Moore was under-utilized in favor of Justin Brown. Either Moore really sucks or Tomlin just didn't like him.

Obviously we won't miss him, it just seems to me that we didn't try real hard to put him to use.

He was supposed to be insurance in case Wheaton or Bryant didn't pan out.

My tin foil hat is on: I don't think he got along with Haley. Just my opinion and I have no proof. I'm no Haley hater, just a guess.

exchange the name Haley with Tomlin and I agree 100% ...

after all we did not see him blow up on Haley on the sidelines , we did however see him blow up on Tomlin on the sidelines

Yeah, I'm just speculating based on Haley's past. But, yeah, that blowup w/ Tomlin didn't help.

But really, none of it matters. Lance Moore is overpaid at $1.8 million at this point in his career. He has lost most of his top-end speed and isn't physical enough to be a short yardage possession guy.

I would rather have (based on existing contracts -- the same cost or less) Cecil Shorts, Denarious Moore, Andre Holmes, and that doesn't even begin to be the tip of the iceberg.

Another FA kept on the perimeter. I am waiting for them to resign Woodley.

Hindsight is 20/20. At the time of his signing, there was a reasonable chance to think he could help replace some of what was lost with Cotchery. Now, it didn't quite work out that way. I don't feel like he was really used properly outside of a handful of plays, but with Wheaton and Bryant both emerging nicely, I also don't feel like you can justify his salary for 2015. He may be doing us the favor by asking for his release.

I wonder whether we can trade him, but I have a feeling other teams will have trouble justifying his salary too, so we might just eat the dead money.

So one of those draft picks is going to be a WR now. Moore is likely out soon, and Brown has already been shown the door.

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/8589/justin-brown.

Time to implement Colbert Draft Plan 17 Alpha:
First round BPA, second round lineman, third round WR, fourth round scat back, 5th round corner, 6th round lineman, and 7th round TE?

Gosh I love being a smart a@@ first thing in the morning. In all seriousness though, looks like the Steelers are in the market for 1-3 WRs this off-season (depending on what happens with DHB).

In the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter all that much. Looking back at this previous season, the Steelers badly mismanaged things with Moore. Yes he was hurt to start the year, but he got healthy and Tomlin STILL played Justin Brown over him. Why? HURR! BECAUSE HE RUN BLOCKS! HURR!

Like I said, in the big picture Moore leaving doesn't mean much. But if this all has to do with Moore's run blocking then it makes the Steelers look petty.

If Moore catches on with another team in 2015 (assuming he gets released) and catches 40-60 balls out of the slot - then the Steelers did mismanage his role.

If he is never heard from again and joins the ranks of the fairly anonymous vets playing out the string - then the Steelers were likely correct to focus on developing Wheaton and Bryant while getting a WR (Justin Brown and DHB) on the field that could help the engine of the offense (Bell) perform better.

Honestly, we will likely never know what happened in that early stretch of the season. Brown playing, the reasons given, and the on-field results don't really add up.

He was mismanaged or should have never been picked up. The guy has talent that was not used and he is running out of time. *Also see Blount.

Looks like a vet WR is on the agenda now.
