Former Steelers great Jerome Bettis toted the football 3,479 times in his 13-year NFL career, earning every one of his 13,662 rushing yards, the sixth-best total in league history. He took hundreds, if not thousands, of brutal hits and was as durable as any running back. But he’s not the toughest person in his family. That’s his mother, Gladys. “The toughest person I know,” Bettis said this week.

Saturday night, Bettis was honored in New Haven, Conn., as the Walter Camp Foundation’s Man of the Year, not just for his work on the field, but his charity work off it in Pittsburgh, his hometown of Detroit and Atlanta, where he lives with his wife, Trameka, daughter, Jada, 9, and son, Jerome Jr., 7. Next week, he will be in Glendale, Ariz., where, on the eve of Super Bowl XLIX between Seattle and New England, he hopes to get word he has been selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In between, he and some former teammates and old friends will stop off Friday night at The Rivers Casino for a charity function honoring his mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer.....
