The NFL's co-passing leader is headed to the Pro Bowl.
He'll be taking the place of the other.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not play in the Jan. 25 game in Glendale, Ariz., and the New Orleans Saints' Drew Brees will take his roster spot, the Saints announced Friday.
Roethlisberger had a career-high 4,952 passing yards this season (tying with Brees for the NFL lead), earning his third Pro Bowl berth. A Steelers spokesmen deferred questions to Roethlisberger's agent, Ryan Tollner, who did not immediately return a message.
Roethlisberger missed three plays in last Saturday's wild-card playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens because of a neck injury. He described the injury as whiplash Tuesday during his 93.7 The Fan radio show.
After the game, Roethlisberger's right hand was wrapped heavily. During his season wrap-up news conference Tuesday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin revealed Roethlisberger “could have offseason surgery (in) a minor procedure to clean up his knee.”
