In the days after the Steelers were upset by the New Orleans Saints three weeks ago, Steelers defensive end Cam Heyward repeatedly said the defense had to do better. He pointed an accusing finger at himself, admonishing his efforts.

Heyward was at his best Sunday as the Steelers clinched a spot in the AFC playoffs for the first time in three seasons with a 20-12 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Heinz Field.

Heyward spearheaded perhaps the defense's best performance this season. He helped bottle up running back Jamaal Charles and energized a usually benign pass rush that recorded a season-high six sacks of quarterback Alex Smith. It was the most sacks since the Steelers got to Cleveland's Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell five times last November.

“I thought we played with a real sense of urgency the past couple of weeks,” said Heyward, who had 1 1⁄2 sacks and three quarterback hits. “We've been in playoff mode since Week 13, so we've been hungry to make it to this point, and we're not going to stop now.”
