A lot has been made of the Steelers’ seeming proficiency in losing games to bad opponents. Many fans say there have been far too many since Mike Tomlin was hired as head coach before the 2007 season. There’s no denying the Steelers have suffered some ugly losses under Tomlin’s tenure.

But which one is the worst? Using a not entirely unscientific method, we compiled the following Top 10.

No. 10 Jets – 19, Steelers 16 (Overtime) – Nov. 18, 2007

En route to their first division title and playoff appearance under Mike Tomlin, the Steelers hit a pothole. With quarterback Kellen Clemens and running back Thomas Jones the offense, the 1-8 Jets scrapped their way to a tying field goal in the fourth quarter and another in overtime for an unlikely victory at Giants Stadium. The loss dropped the Steelers record to 7-3.

UGH, what an ugly reminder. I'm sorry I read that and relived those miserable games. Matt Cassell twice, Jets twice and Raiders twice.

I was at that game . If I can remember , Clemens threw a 60 yard bomb in their first possession and a play later they scored. Sounds familiar like this pass Sunday where Vick threw a bomb and they scored first

They should present him with a trophey for this accomplishment at the next home game.

No. 6 Browns – 13, Steelers – 6 – Dec. 10, 2009
(Highlights: http://bit.ly/1sJ6tLy)

Just four days later, the final chapter of the Steelers’ 5-game losing streak of 2009 was written – A Thursday night loss in windy, sub-freezing conditions in Cleveland. The Browns sacked Ben Roethlisberger 9 times. It was the Browns’ first win against Steelers since 2003. Also, the Browns became only the fourth team in NFL history to be at least 10 games under .500 and defeat a defending Super Bowl champion. The Browns’ win made them 2-11. The Steelers fell to 6-7.

I will never forget this one. This ranks #1 for me because of how bad they played. This year's losses sucked, yes, but that game in 2009 was sickening. Horrible.

How is losing to the Broncos in the playoffs not on the list?

Ah, yes the mother of all embarrassments, icing on the Tomlin cake.

The fact that we even need a list like this is sickening in itself.

Not the fact that the list is actually legitimately longer than just 10? Lol.

The loss against the raiders(4-12) in 2012 is not on the list!

Same for the loss vs Titans in 2012 and 2013

The 2012 Raiders is number 3.

The one I always remember is the one vs Texans where Maddox threw a bunch of pick sixes, the Texans had like 51 yards offense and won the game.

Nevermind, that is long pre-Tomlin era.

Don't blame yourself...feels like it would fit right in with a Tomlin game.

This from the profootballhof.com profile of Chuck Noll:

"Above all, Noll put an emphasis on winning against teams that finished under .500. During an eight-year span beginning in 1972, [the Steelers] won an incredible 59 of 60 games against the so-called weaker teams. His record at the same time against teams finishing above .500 was an undistinguished 29-26-1. In postseason play, however, his Steelers were 13-4 during that period."

In other words win the games you're supposed to, split the rest, and play home playoff games and make Super Bowl runs.

Can't believe I'm the only one who sees relevance in this? :wtf:

the real loser in all of this is the fact we even need a thread to talk about it .....

no reason to be this inept vs bad teams , none , zero, zip , nada , yet we do .....

you're not ...

least not totally alone .......

always said win the games vs the ugly step sisters and win your division games and you are a shoe in to make the playoffs regardless of what you do against the supposed elite teams , then
anyone that goes on a hot streak can win the Lombardi

When the all time great coaches are listed Noll is too often ignored. And it's a shame. Because when he had the best team on the field he almost never lost. Which isn't nearly as easy as it sounds. I know he was a .500 coach in the 80's. But those teams weren't very good. Not saying Noll doesn't share some of the responsibility for the dearth of talent in the 80's. But even then he rarely if ever lost to a less talented team.

in fact he often found a way to beat teams he had no right in beating ... remember the 1984 Mark Malone led Steelers handing the Joe Montana led 49ers ( Bill Walsh era ) their only loss of the season ( in Candlestick ) to finish 15-1

I remember it.

I think his greatest coaching job ever relevant to talent might have been 89 when they got crushed by the Browns and Bengals to the tune of like 80 something to 10, or around that to open the season. Then they came back and finished 9-7 and won an overtime thriller at the expense of a much more talented Houston Oiler team, then they came within a Mark Strock drop of beating the Broncos in Denver and advancing to the AFC title game.

Your not alone, Zu. It's just that the present *coach* isn't a coach. Everyones come to expect the Steelers to lose to bad teams….and they do.

I was just reading about the Broncos 1989 game the other day. Remember flipping out when Stock dropped that pass. Here's a recap on it from Steelers.com.

Will Tomlin's first ugly loss get bumped in 2 days? Will this list have to be redone in 2 days?
