Linebacker Patrick Willis will miss the remainder of the season and needs surgery for his strained muscle in his left big toe.
The team placed him on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday and filled his roster spot by signing running back Alfonso Smith to a one-year contract.
"It's very frustrating,'' Willis said. "My teammates mean everything to me and I want to be out there experiencing all the good times and all the rough times with them.''
Tough break.

many see " toe injury " and think SOFT ... not the case it forced early retirement on one of the toughest SOB's to ever play the game Jack "Splat" Lambert ..your feet are your foundation and where all your explosion derives from ....
Love Willis as a player ( hoped he would be a Steeler but we got the consolation prize in Timmons instead that year )
wish him a fast recovery

Not me - broke the pinky toe on my left foot a little over a month ago and wound up hobbling around for about 3 weeks afterward. I'm still having twinges of pain in it here and there.
An athlete's feet are a huge part of their livelihood.

I had one gout attack on my big toe and that was excruciating.
Any toe injury sucks.

On the bright side for them, the rookie who came in to replace him has been TEARING IT UP. Something like 35 tackles in 2 games. I honestly think Willis might have been their second-best linebacker last year after Navorro Bowman, but no matter what it still sucks to lose a guy like that.

he has been good ( 50 tackles 1 sack in 3 starts ) Borland proving detractors wrong , many thought he had 1st round ability while others thought 3rd round ... looks more like 1st round to me at this point
