Ben Roethlisberger: Steelers' coaches need to be sharper too

Observed and heard after the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/pit/pittsburgh-steelers)' 20-13 loss to the New York Jets (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/nyj/new-york-jets) on Sunday at MetLife Stadium:
Ben Roethlisberger (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/5536/ben-roethlisberger) admittedly did not play well despite throwing for more 300 yards for the third consecutive game. But the veteran quarterback said the Steelers have to do a better job on the sidelines as well as on the field. Roethlisberger threw a pass to James Harrison (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/4433/james-harrison) in the fourth quarter from the Jets’ 1-yard after the veteran outside linebacker had entered the game as a fullback. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the pass play with the Steelers trailing 20-3 wasn’t supposed to go to Harrison. Roethlisberger went a step further. “He’s not supposed to be in on that play. The players didn’t play well but we also had a couple of issues there getting the right guys in,” Roethlisberger said....

Well why was he? You have Bell & Blount and you put James Harrison in, who never played RB in the nfl…. on a goal line play?

Hey Ben--you're an 11-year veteran. There's a little tactic called an "audible" that can be used by quarterbacks if they look across the line of scrimmage and see that the playcall from the sideline isn't going to work.

Trouble being that by the time they get the play call in, and the right people on the field to go with the play Ben's looking at a rapidly expiring play clock.

Well Ben had 3 timeouts and 20+ seconds on the play clock when he snapped it. So if he really felt James shouldn't have been there, then that is on him. Plenty of time to either audible, call a time out, or whatever, it is only first and goal.

Second,whoever the hell 89 is is wide damn open and Ben never gets his head around. He locked on to either Heath or Harrison the whole time.

Overall, the play looks to be an overly clever attempt to pass for score out of 3 TE "big" package. Burn this one.

Bad call, and even worse execution by the on field leader of the offense.

Yeah I would have hated to have our real FB in on that play. He might have screened the defender and actually caught the pass. Way too much over thinking by a lousy coaching staff

There are some good things you can do with that. Harrison being on the field in the red zone is going to draw attention from the defense. Basically you can use him as decoy.

Of course, the play was either badly designed or badly executed or both, so that didn't happen.

just 3 guys out in pattern on that play ..

1 being Harrison who has zero receptions in his lifetime and where he ends up when the ball comes out is basically poor underneath coverage of his own man 5 yards behind him ( helping the def to some degree ) is it Miller behind Harrison ? cant tell for sure in the tiny image

4 Jets within 10 feet of the receiver to the left side of the field ( Palmer ) ...

Basically Harrison is the only one close to open ...

but why was he on the field if its a pass ... run and I half way understand
