Early in 1975, after the Steelers had won their first Super Bowl, a receptionist at the team’s facility answered a phone, saying, “World champion Pittsburgh Steelers.”

Overhearing this, The Chief nearly swallowed his cigar. “No,” Art Rooney Sr. corrected, gently, “we’re just ‘Pittsburgh Steelers.’ ”

Joe Greene knows how understated The Chief was, and how this endearing quality has passed through the Rooney bloodline to his son and grandson.

That’s why Mr. Greene became lightheaded when Dan Rooney and Art II gathered with him at the team’s offices in June and said they wanted to retire his jersey, No. 75........
