It has become a recurring theme for the Steelers, and it has not been a good one.
Since 2012, when they missed the playoffs for only the second time since Mike Tomlin became coach, the Steelers have lost six games to teams that had a combined 8-28 record at the time they played them.
Included in that record are three losses to teams that were winless at the time, the most recent being last Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Heinz Field.
In each of the past two seasons, when they finished 8-8 and failed to qualify for the postseason, a victory in any one of those disturbing defeats would have sent the Steelers to the playoffs.
"You look back on a season, sometimes you don't realize, losing to that team, the implications of what it is," said veteran safety Will Allen.
"We've been through that already. We've been through that stage already. We've been through that the past two years, going 8-8."
Allen added: "It's about having a finisher's mentality - finishing each game, finishing each play. If we do that, those games get you 10-6 and 11-5."
