Ben Roethlisberger can complete 29 of 40 passes, as he did Sunday, and be hailed for having a good game. Le'Veon Bell can run 15 times for 180 yards, and two other times for no gain, and he might be offensive player of the week. Jason Worilds can have three sacks on 60 snaps today in Jacksonville and be the toast of the town.

Only one Steelers player is expected to be perfect when he steps on the field each game: kicker Shaun Suisham. Last Sunday, he extended his team record by nailing his 24th consecutive field goal without a miss, a 25-yarder in the first quarter against Tampa Bay. He then missed a 50-yarder wide right and coach Mike Tomlin called him out Tuesday at his news conference.

"Shaun Suisham is purely capable of banging that 50-yarder," Tomlin said...........

Professor Harrison
It was another Steelers Pro Bowl linebacker, Greg Lloyd, who wore the saying, "I wasn't hired for my disposition" on a T-shirt. Those words also fit James Harrison to a tee.
Yet, he has turned mentor to some young Steelers linebackers in the short time he has spent with them in his comeback.
"They're open to everything," Harrison said. "They've been questioning, asking everything under the sun about things that I do, don't do, what my regimen is, so on."
What tricks can an old linebacker teach the young?
"Just as far as understanding what you need to do to be a professional, to excel in this game," Harrison explained. "[Also] how to approach things, what to do as far as taking care of your body, all that."
It might have been even more useful had the Steelers signed him back in March.

No excuses! These guys now have Dick Lebeau, Joey Porter and James Harrison.............. a Wikipedia of defensive know how at their disposal.

Suisham has turned into a very good kicker for us. Not many guys can make 50+ yarders with any kind of consistency and he's been money from just about any distance less than that.

I think Sushi's problem with 50 yarders may be mental.

Very possible as he hits just about everything inside that distance.

The other possibility is the way he has learned to kick only provides the accuracy within 50.

In other words he might have to change his mechanics a little to get any further distances.

If that is the case he could consider practicing 50 yarders more.

Maybe he already does.

I think Suisham missing a 50-yard FG is the least of our worries.

I thought I read that he was kicking way longer than that at camp.

So when we lose a game by 3 points which is the equivalent of the field goal he missed we should not be concerned?

If it's 50+ they should tell him it's only 49.

I'm referring to the fact that we lost to Tampa Bay and scored 17 points against a winless Jacksonville team that had an almost -100 point differential coming into today's game.

It may just be that kicking a football 50+ yards is hard to do and I really don't think Suisham has ever had the leg for that.

Well, for the amount of money he's paid, you would expect a kicker to be able to hit 50+ yards, no? I sure do!

Here is the full set of numbers for Suisham's extension which officially amounts to a total value of $12,575,000 including a $2.85 million signing bonus.

Hmm. I don't have a problem with his cap number this year. But next year he'll have a higher cap hit than Sebastian Janikowski.

Just no.

I could care less about his cap #. The bottom line is Sushi has never had a big leg. Remember the year he struggled to even reach the endzone on kick-off? He is what he is - accurate from inside 45 yards -- a total gamble outside that distance.

I have never understood why serious competition is not brought to camp each year, but that is just me.

Maybe we can sign Matt Prater (34-of-53 for his career between 40-49) and people can swoon over his big leg (never minding he's played at altitude in Denver for all but one season of his career) when he shanks a 40-yarder that loses a game for us that Suisham (38-of-44 for his career at the same distance) would generally be automatic at...

I guess my point about the cap is, while I don't have a problem with Suisham, if we're going to be paying that kind of money we could have one of the league elites instead.

Though with some of the weapon players we have on offense, we really should be able to drive it inside the 30 more often than not. Maybe a better solution is to go get us one of them punters from Australia or South America with the ridiculous leg, accept the fact that there will be a few more touchbacks... and if we ever need to nail a prayer 60 yard FG to win a game as time expires, send him out instead of Suisham. (is that allowed within league rules? have your punter kick a FG?)

I am curious if most of his misses are short?

I have no idea. But if you are straining to get all the distance you can out of the kick, accuracy is going to fly out the window.

Suisham has been a solid kicker and, sure you would like to see him nail a 50+. Plus we all know kicking at Heinz is no easy task and, like many have said he is almost automatic from 49 and in.

Suisham missing a 50 yarder is the least of our worries. If I am not mistaken Suisham has scored more points than the rest of the offense combined. Instead of blaming the kicker why not focus on finding out why the Offense can't score more than one touchdown against the worst Defenses in the league.
