No one in NFL history threw for 10,000 yards and rushed for 2,000 yards in their first four seasons before Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton did it in three.
Newton’s start also included 92 touchdowns (throwing and rushing), second most for an NFL player in his first three seasons behind only Dan Marino.
Newton is the poster child for the new wave of NFL quarterbacks — an elite athlete with a big arm who can beat opponents in a variety of ways.
“He’s the quintessential modern quarterback,” Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau said.
When the Steelers face Newton Sunday night in Charlotte, they must be aware of his running ability, but there are signs he is becoming more of a pocket passer than dual-threat quarterback..................
