One of the best pass rushers in NFL history may be ready to call it quits because of concussions.

Cardinals defensive end John Abraham, who suffered a concussion on Monday night against the Chargers, has left the team and may not return, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Schefter reports that Abraham has been suffering from memory loss for well over a year, and this could be the end of his NFL career.

The 36-year-old Abraham has 133.5 sacks in his NFL career, ranking ninth in league history.

That's unfortunate, as well as a bit scary that he chose to continue playing after experiencing problems.

Maybe he was one of those guys who said "I love the game so much I don't want to quit until I can't play, etc.," or maybe he figured "I'm already going to have problems no matter what I do, so fuck it, might as well keep playing and enjoy it while I still can?"

I don't know, either way I hope the best for him. Your initial reaction is to say, "Good choice to hang it up while your health is still OK," but I'm not sure if that applies here.

Update:

John Abraham returning to Cardinals

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said linebacker John Abraham will return to the team this week.

The NFL's active sacks leader had a long conversation with Arians last Tuesday before leaving the team. Abraham told his coach he was losing his desire to play football.

Not sure how I feel about this. I mean, it's your own life, man, but god damn.

If he passes Strahan, he'll retire after that game.
