The top teams in the NFL allow their quarterback to be sacked on average a little more than once per game. The AFC champion Denver Broncos, for example, gave up 20 sacks in 2013.

The Steelers, on the other hand, allowed 22 before Columbus Day. They were on pace to give up 60, or almost four per game, before the no-huddle offense alleviated some of the pass protection concerns in the second half of the season.

Still, the Steelers allowed 43 sacks, which isn't a good statistic for a team with a franchise quarterback. The inability to protect Ben Roethlisberger has been a constant theme for years. Whether the Steelers have been Super Bowl contenders or merely mediocre in the form of the past two seasons, their sack totals annually have ranked among the worst in the NFL...........
