I bag on Goodell a lot, but he got this one right. Kudos for a change.

Just wonder why they take so long to announce the suspensions. Is that really fair to the team now? They could have used the preseason to prep a replacement for Smith.

Not that I particularly care about the 49ers, but it just seems wrong to do it this way. I don't know if the 49ers had prior knowledge, but the timing sucks.

I'm sure they knew he was going to be suspended a while back; they just didn't know how long. At any rate, even though it took them so long to announce it, they made the right call. Screw Goodell, but kudos to him.

Yeah, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out something was coming, although in typical Goodell fashion, he still managed to make it into a dick move by doing it right on the very last day of preseason.

Overall this means just short of a whole missed season for Smith, but two DUIs and a gunfight and some bomb threats will do that. Dude's a dumbass. He's just lucky that for the weapons charge he wasn't like Plaxico, and lived in a state like California with lenient gun laws. Wait -- what?
