I predict two things

I predict that his salary will be 6-7 million per year at least......The Steelers have given $ 30 million over five years on Willie Colon.....Also, I predict that several fan will be upset about his salary!

Marcus Gilbert has signed a five-year, $30 million extension with the Steelers, per league source.

I perdict he is at a buffet celebrating at this very moment.

So how does 5 years 30 mil compare to the average starters for his position.

Also isn't this smaller (relatively speaking) than 5 years 30 mil before the salary cap increase?

Is he worth it? I guess it's not too rich. I hope he doesn't get soft...

It will all be in the breakdown of the deal. While it is being called a 5-year, $30M deal, it is an extension. He is only scheduled to make $815,000 this year. I doubt he ends up making that amount. In fact, I know he will make more. If they pay the signing bonus right now, that counts against the cap this season. So, in essence, it is really a 6 year, $30.815M deal. If they give him $6M to sign, his cap hit this year rises to $2M, but the next 5 years is only $28.8M. If they give him $10M to sign, his cap hit is $2.8M, but he only has $28M over the next 5 years. I stated earlier that the going rate for a right tackle was $4-$5M and it might be better to give a little more to secure him than it would be to bid for him next season, when the cap rises.

So, really need to see the numbers....

I do not know yet what will be the cap hit of Gilbert in 2014, but the biggest cap hit for a RT is 7.5 million

That was too much money to throw at an unproven player. Hopefully his first year salary is about $3 million and his average salary for the first 2 years is less than $4 million (Sure it was a front-loaded deal with an escalating salary).

Which is it? 6 years and $30 million, or 5 years and $30 million? The first one is not too bad; if he turns out to be above-average, it's a good deal. The second one I would have a harder time believing we got really strong value.

Please, please, please, please tell me this is not backloaded and is going to end up being restructured. If so, hello Dead Money Tour 2018!

This. No more heavily backloaded contracts - increased salary cap or not.

A 2 or 3 year deal with no more than an average of $4 million a year would have been better with little guaranteed money. If he played really well, then we could throw more money at him and have more time to work out an extension that signs him for the long term. If not, then the contract doesn't look as bad and we failed while taking less of a risk

Gilbert would have had no reason to accept this contract and if the Steelers would not have given this contract, Gilbert would have been free agent next year and the Steelers probably would have lost him as they lost Keenan Lewis after the 2012 season and the steelers would have been in trouble with Mike Adams as RT in 2015

that was never going to happen. i meant what would you have us do since not doing the current deal would mean gilbert would be leaving.

The Gilbert deal is not backloaded, in fact, the largest cap hit is next season, and then drops each season after that. The cap hits are $2.392 million (2014), $6.98 million (2015), $5.53 million (2016), $5.58 million (2017), $5.63 million (2018), and $4.915 million (2019).

The big key to keeping those numbers will be next season. If they have enough space and do not restructure anyone, this contract turns out well from 2016-2019, but there is a $3.5 million roster bonus due next season that could end up being a candidate for restructure.

The roster bonus wouldn't be too bad to spread out if we had to; it would add something like $750K across the last 3 years. The real question is whether he turns out to play like a lineman who makes $6M or $7M a year.
