His NFL debut was highly-anticipated, and befitting a guy comfortable with the spotlight, Ryan Shazier (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/ryan-shazier/7e3347f2-0be9-4413-bca3-b929f03e18a3/) didn’t disappoint. In his first preseason action, Shazier was the starting inside linebacker next to Lawrence Timmons (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/lawrence-timmons/afc86dd7-633e-4e37-a4da-5f089a96b666/), and he played until there was about five minutes left in the first half. In that span, Shazier had nine tackles, an interception that he returned 27 yards to set up the Steelers’ second touchdown, and he also had two tackles on special teams.

Ryan Shazier is the Steelers Digest Player of the Week.

“I thought he did some good things but not unlike what he’s done when he’s worked,” said Coach Mike Tomlin about Shazier. “From the instant he got here he’s proven that it’s not too big for him, so I can’t tell you that I’m surprised by his effort tonight. I’m not.”

Also considered was quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/ben-roethlisberger/54dda34e-9e43-4c57-9397-1143ddced5d6/), who completed 8-of-11 for 128 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a passer rating of 150.8; wide receiver Antonio Brown (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/antonio-brown/859114e9-d70b-477b-8eaf-6f34bb1ffc03/), who caught two passes for 93 yards, including a 76-yard catch-and-run for the team’s first touchdown; safety Robert Golden (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/robert-golden/80b22c56-f6cd-4f6e-a383-406ade654331/), who broke up a fourth-down pass in the end zone, intercepted another pass, and recovered a fumble; inside linebacker Terence Garvin (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/terence-garvin/d971d6a3-07b5-440a-bcc2-98521780c2e1/), who had seven tackles, including one for loss, plus a sack; outside linebacker Vic So’oto, who had three tackles, a sack and a forced fumble; and punter Brad Wing (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/brad-wing/cd9558f8-b8f8-4488-aceb-d52e09be9eb0/), who averaged 44.5 yards on six punts, with two inside the 20-yard line.

Great first game for the kid. Some interesting decisions have to be made on the D.

Shazier was a monster out there. Well deserved and I can't wait to see him play some more!

If the kid keeps his nose clean he will be the face of the defense in a couple of years.

Don't forget to give credit to the DL. They kept the lanes open for the LBers to make the plays. The interior linemen could not get to Shazier, so he was free to make the plays. Kind of the same thing the OL does for a running back.

Which is what the Steelers have always liked to do. We may be on our why to having our defence back. Shazier has the speed and instinct to take advantage on this.
