Shazier is the real deal.

For how quiet Jones' rookie season was Shazier sure came out guns blazing.

I hope Jerry Jones watches the Steelers game and see what talent that Steelers robbed him of. You know he was gonna take Shazier if we passed on him. Given the wasteland of crap the Cowboys have now at inside linebacker, Shazier must look like a God to him. So glad we drafted this kid. And to think, he's only going to get better from here.

I came home after a long day of black belt testing, and fell asleep right before kickoff. So I missed the entire game. But I'm glad that Shazier not only played, but had an excellent game. So...for now, at least...he has shut up the internet morons declaring him a "bust" before he played a preseason down.

to be fair, he could have cleaned up his tackling technique for sure on at least 2 plays. that being said, i cant help but get excited for the guy

To be fair, one could say the same about the entire D.

Pretty impressive debut. :applaudit:

How many tackles would have made if he played more than a quarter and a half?

He is a tackling machine. Sideline to sideline, excellent in coverage, fast as advertised. Only thing i didn't see from him last night is pass rush. Maybe i missed it. I would watch the game again today, with a closer look on his plays. Overall i'm excited to see what he can do when he plays full game.

It will be interesting to track Shazier in comparison to Dennard. Just like Lacy and Bell from the last draft class. The player many wanted or expected the Steelers to take and then the player they actually took.

I was happy we took Shazier over Dennard but realize I was in the minority , however long term I think many will be happy we went Shazam

From what I've heard, lots of folks are expecting Dennard to be a PI machine, especially with the new rules.

So I've said it before, the person Shazier was drafted to replace is not Larry Foote or Vince Williams or even Timmons. It is Polamalu. I think that Shazier will eventually do some of the things Polamalu did for this defense; only from the LB level rather than the secondary level.

I could see a scenario where Shazier progress to the point that he is granted the same freelancing freedom that Polamalu currently has.

I was so pumped when we drafted him, and Saturday you all got a glimpse why.

Shazier is going to be a beast, even as a rookie. He can range sideline-to-sideline, cover the tight end/slot receiver in coverage, and just wait until they send him on the blitz.

I am going to make a prediction, Ryan Shazier will lead the Pittsburgh Steelers in total tackles this season.

Come on...Shazier is a bust, only 11 tackles and he didn't take the INT back for a TD..he has bust written all over him.:pop2:

I practice Tang Soo Do, the same art that produced the badass known as Chuck Norris. I tested for 3rd degree black belt Thursday night and Saturday morning/afternoon.

I actually feel that the guy he was drafted to replace is Farrior, who they have not even come close to replacing. And, I am talking about the young Farrior, not the guy hanging on to his job because they did not have anyone even close to him. I think what Farrior did was vastly underrated. He had good speed and excellent instincts. He understood the game and his play opened things up.

I do admit that Shazier looks like a better version of Farrior. I will also admit that the selection of Shazier took me be surprise. Of course, I wanted Kyle Fuller. I thought his game fit us extremely well. But, he was gone. When they took Shazier, I worried he would get bounced around too much inside. Then, they took Tuitt, which I thought was smart. You then have two potentially very good DEs in front of Shazier and Timmons, eating up blockers, keeping them clean, and allowing him to run. When they added McCullers, I thought, wow, that could be a massive line that really keeps the LBs clean. Very similar to what Baltimore did with Goose and Adams, keeping Lewis clean and allowing him to run and tackle.

There are some moves the Steelers make that are simply head scratchers, then, some, you can see the logic. I see the logic in selecting Shazier, Tuitt, and McCullers. You have a massive nose and two big DEs to help clog running lanes with fast LBs to fill. On passing downs, you take out the big nose, bring in a DB, then you have ILBs that can run and cover, OLBs to rush the passer, and two interior guys that can get after it. It allows you to stay very close to your base defenses and handle the run and the pass. I like spending middle and later round picks on guys that could potentially develop into starters. Sure, they can bust out, but that, to me, is better than spending those picks on niche guys or known part time players out the box.

to be fair, he could have cleaned up his tackling technique for sure on at least 2 plays. that being said, i cant help but get excited for the guy

But to be really fair, he slipped on the field a couple of times. Maybe he's too fast for his own good, and if he hits a slippery patch he's gonna go down faster than most. Blount slipped on a route as well. I never really trusts that field. I'm not too worried about Shazier's tackling. He's played one game against pros and he not only held his own, he looked like the most talented guy on the field much of the time. Imagine what he's gonna be like with some actual experience under his belt? He actually took bad angles a couple of times and still was fast enough to run down the play. I personally had very high expectations for the kid and he blew me away. We all know how hard it is for rookie linebackers to look anything but lost in our defense. I'm not saying Shazier is Super Man or anything, but what's nice is to know that even when he makes mistakes (and let's be realistic, he will make quite a few this season) he is never completely out of a play due to his raw physical ability, but more than that, due to his motor and will to succeed. Lot's of athletic phenoms come into this league and do very little. Ryan Shazier is not gonna be one of those guys. You can just see it in the way he plays. And the way Joey Porter greeted him on the sidelines with that fired up chest bump, you just now Peezy sees it too. And he's one to know about that extra "it" factor. Shazier has it. I'm not gonna put him in the Hall of Fame yet, but if he stays healthy, he will be something special for us for some time. It kind of reminded me of James Harrison's breakout game against the Ravens that one night where he was just dominant. It was the night I knew we had some special there too (and that Peezy, much as I loved him, was expendable). And it took Harrison years to get to that point. Shazier is starting from a great place.

When I saw Shazier's interception it made me think of something Ben talked about earlier in training camp. Ben threw a pass that he thought was uncatchable by anyone but his receiver, but Shazier made an incredibly athletic interception that really surprised Ben. At that point he new he was seeing something special emerge. I'm not saying his pick against the Bills was the most athletic play of all times, but it did show that he will no doubt make some unexpected splash plays for us this year. That's something we've been sorely lacking on our defense for the past couple of seasons. I also like that we have someone who can cover a speedy, athletic tight end. That's becoming more and more important in the NFL, and I'm think about a possible game changing moment against a team like the Pats who thrive on tight end mismatches (at least when Gronk is healthy). Also against a team like the Broncos where Manning might trust his talented TE to come down with a high throw only to have Shazier change the entire game with one play. I know I'm day dreaming here, but those are the kinds of plays that ultimately make the difference between moving on and going home. The last couple of times we went to the Super Bowl, we thrived on getting splash plays from our defense in key moments. It's not like we never let teams drive down the field in those years, it's just that our guys would make the big play when we really needed them to. Without the splash plays… well, we see how average to bad our defense can look.
