Well, it's been "unofficially" retired for years now. Glad the team has made it official, though.

Absolutely. And if you're gonna start adding, his is a perfect place to start. The beginning of the new era... So to speak.

Well deserved and long over due. Will we see a flurry of jersey numbers being retired now? Bradshaw, Lambert, Ham, Harris?

I don't think so. I think Mean Joe was intentionally singled out. Just like the logo only on one side of the helmet, no cheerleaders, few coaching changes, retiring jersey numbers will be held to a minimum. It's one of their things. Give it another 30 years and they'll figure out someone else to do it with. But if there's a next, that would open the floodgates and then it wouldn't have the same meaning.

If they were to retire an additional number, all the names you mentioned would be likely candidates. But I would have to wonder if Bradshaw would be slid down the list further due to all the bridges he's burned in Pittsburgh over the years? My guess the next one would be between Franco, Lambert and Ham. Too hard to break that tie, that's why I think they'll end it with Joe.

Yeah, I agree with Zu. Keeps with the mystique of the Steelers.

They don't issue (per Wikipedia, couldn't find another source):

It just really got to the point where it was the right thing to do, and Joe obviously is the right, first person from that team to have his number retired.” Art Rooney II.

I think Art is leaving open the possibility of more. What I am thinking is that there will be more, but it won't likely be a yearly thing. Maybe 4 or 5 over the next ten years?

They should add 26 and 47 to their list. Will never be another Rod Woodson or Mel Blount.

Was just about to say the same thing.

I like that they are retiring Joe's jersey he deserves it.

For the rest it would be neat if they retired their lockers that way you could honor them without retiring the jerseys. I know it's a weird idea but it would be a cool way to honor all the rest.
