View Full Version : Reasons for Steelers' Offensive Line Woes

I realize we have had some bad luck on offensive line the past 8 years or so.

However I wonder how much of that has been bad coaching and bad decisions as opposed to bad drafting.

Just curious how many offensive linemen we have let go that are starting elsewhere in the NFL?

Coaching matters, from the top on down. Good ones are hard to find, its the same in business…..most managers are horrible.

Urbik is "starting" in Buffalo. See link for the gory details

But I can't really think of another example.

Legursky?

Lego started 11 games last year

Legursky got 11 starts for the Bills last year because they had no better options http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5262/doug-legursky

Shipley started 9 games for the Ravens.

Colon is Colon. Takes a ton of penalties, has his ups and downs and gets hurt once a year or so http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/3912/willie-colon

All of these guys, except maybe Colon, are replacement level players. In theory, they were let go because the Steelers either had or wanted better players at the positions.

I was bored so I went back and went through all (hopefully all) the OL going back to 2005 in PF reference.

Colon and Kemo were cap casualties and injury/penalty prone. Faneca was a free agent. Hartings retired.

Sean Mahan sucked.

Trai Essex last played in 2012 for the Colts (Arians). Marvin Phillip 2006 6th round pick and Cameron Stephenson 2007 5th round draft pick disappeared off the face of the earth.

Starks, Hartwig, Stapleton, Simmons, 4 starters on the SB XLIII are all out of football. J.Scott and The Hotel from the SB XLV team are gone/retired. Ramon Foster is the only remaining starter from the XLV team

2011 6th round pick: Keith Williams (who?)- played 2 games for Buffalo in 2012.

2010 5th round pick: Chris Scott - started 8 games for Carolina in 2013.

2008 4th round pick: Tony Hills - started 1 game in Indy in 2012.

Beachum, Foster, Pouncey, DeCastro, Gilbert, Adams, Goose, Abdullah the Whimper and Wesley Johnson are Munchak's current group.

Urbik, Shipley, Legs mentioned above. I think that is everybody since 2005.

There, fixed it for you (and yes, they equally sucked).
