View Full Version : Ex-NFL GM Charley Casserly: Russell Wilson not a top-12 QB

Charley Casserly probably isn't going to get a warm welcome the next time he's in Seattle. In a piece for NFL.com this week, the former NFL general manager wrote that he's not too high on Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.
The NFL Network is putting together a list of the top-100 players of 2014 and Wilson is ranked as one of the top-five quarterbacks (His exact ranking hasn't been revealed yet). That's a bit high for Casserly though, who doesn't even have Wilson ranked in his top-10.
"I do not consider Russell Wilson a Top-10 quarterback, let alone one who belongs in the top five," Casserly wrote. "The Seahawks win because they have one of the NFL's best defenses and an outstanding running back in Marshawn Lynch. Wilson -- who I think is a good, but not elite, passer -- operates in an offense that takes a lot of pressure off him, meaning the Seahawks don't have to rely upon his arm to win games."
So who would Casserly take over Wilson in an imaginary quarterback draft?
"In no particular order, I would rank these AFC signal-callers ahead of Wilson: Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck, Tom Brady and, possibly, Joe Flacco," Casserly wrote. "And the NFC quarterbacks I would rank ahead of him: Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Eli Manning (despite his poor 2013 season), Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, Tony Romo and Nick Foles."

Im not buying into Wilson hype either. He is good, but his supporting cast is tremendous and he doesnt have to win games just not lose them. Maybe he has top ten potential but i didnt see that in his performances. We would see what Wilson is made of when salary cap forces Seahawks to say goodbye to some of theirs stars

Wilson had a 101 efficiency rating.
That is very good.
The strength of his supporting cast no doubt contributed to this.
He could have screwed it up like Neil O'Donnel and lost.

I agree with him. Wilson isn't asked to do a lot with that offense. He's protected by the great running game and OL.

But I disagree with some QB he named.....Foles was great, but it's only 10 games...Matthew Stafford is not better than Wilson...Flacco and Eli were bad last year...And I'm not sure on Matt Ryan also
But a QB who has not named, but he is better than Wilson is Cam Newton

Agree for the running game, and he has also the best defense in the NFL.But the o-line of the seahawks is average

I'll say I think he's better than Kaepernick. Neither one of them are top 10, though.

I'd disagree about Stafford. I think he's much better than Wilson.

Stafford is too inefficient right now
Great team or not,the effectiveness of Wilson is very impressive in his first two seasons.....A QB rating of 100.6 in his first two season

lol ... if people are saying Flacco and Romo are better than you, then you KNOW it's bad news.
I don't think Wilson is a top-10 QB either. For that matter, neither is Kaepernick. They're OK passers with a ton of great players around them.
Early on, they could change games with their playmaking ability - but as soon as you pick up the tag of "franchise quarterback" instead of "upstart newcomer trying to make a name for himself," then they make you pull it back in and take fewer chances in order to Protect Their Investment. Then everyone goes "OMG SOPHOMORE SLUMP!!!" and wonders why you declined. Well, it's because they took away the one element of your game that makes you something other than an average pocket passer.
Seriously, the 49ers would do much better if they let Kaepernick play his game the way he did two years ago, and just live with the fact that he's probably going to get hurt one season out of two. Have a decent backup. Same thing goes with RGIII, although one more serious injury for him and he's probably done. Too bad they traded half a draft of all first-round picks for him, but that's the Redskins.

Mobile QB like Kaepernick, Wilson, Newton and RGIII can have a good career, because they are able to beat you with the legs and with the arm
Except for RGIII, the other three QB are between 8-15 with Flacco, Luck, Ryan,Eli(if last year it was a fluke) and Fole( if his season last year was not a fluke)...His QB are very close
RGIII can be in this group if his bad season last year was a fluke too

if i was asked this a year ago, i would have agreed. i thought wilson was a fluke as well. but even in games where marshawn lynch disappeared and/or he had shitty pass protection, russell has excelled (See--> Panthers, Saints, Giants, 1st Rams game). I saw 3 of those games in there entirety, even with a great surrounding cast, he has thrived when they have failed him.
the kid has had as good of a first 2 years as any quarterback ever has. i think its hardly fair to have expected him to do more at this point.

This....Only Dan Marino and maybe Ben Roethlisberger has been better than Wilson in his first 2 years
Stats of Wilson:52 TD, 17 INT with a QB rating of 100.6 in 2 season....That's incredible

Yes, he has had a great defense and Lynch. But, he has had some no names at WR so he's done well. I don't particularly care for the Seachickens but Wilson's a good QB.
As far as rankings, it's all subjective and I'm not going to pop a blood vessel worrying about who is ranked where. Except for Bert Flaccid, who is "elite".

Wilson is clutch. He doesn't choke in the big moments. Remember the NFC Championship Game last year? Kaepernick needs to make that throw to lead the 49ers down the field to win the game, he throws a pick.
His stats (yards, TD's) might not blow you away. But the guy does not screw up when the pressure is on him. Remember we all said the same thing about Tom Brady at the beginning of his run, now he's a first ballot Hall of Famer. Wilson will likely never throw 50 touchdowns in a single season, but he's going to be the next "Mr. Clutch."
He's going to consistently give you 25+ TD's a year. And as they open up the offense to him even more, his yards should continue to go up.
