It occurs to me that we've got way too much talent where everybody thought we would be thin. What a great problem to have!
I don't see any controversy at QB, but I do see some tough decisions coming up at RB and WR.

We've only got room on our team for 3 runningbacks. So who's gonna make it?
Mendy and MeMo are a given. That leaves the battle for 1 spot between Redman, Dwyer, Wright, Vincent, and Summers. Granted, Summers is actually a FB, but they've been trying to work him in as a RB as well.

Wide Receivers:
Hines Ward, Antwaan Randle El, Mike Wallace are definitely in. We can hold maybe 3 more out of the following:
Arnaz Battle
Antonio Brown
Tyler Grisham
Stefan Logan (return specialist)
Brandon London
Emmanuel Sanders
Limas Sweed
Isaiah Williams

weve pretty much always kept atleast 3 rb +1 fb. i think summers was given such a long look last night to test his potential as the full time back if mendenhall goes down. he looked good.

mendenhall, redman, moore, summers (dwyer on practice squad or IR)

we typically only keep 5 wr, but this year i think we may be forced to keep 6 due to already paid bonuses, and the immense talent and potential upside of the rookies.

el, hines, battle, sanders, wallace and brown (sweed is in IR and we got him til next year).

logan seems almost impossible to cut due to be near tops in the league in returns but if he secures a spot, i think he will need to knock someone besides a wr or rb off the roster.

we are also very thick at LB. i think we keep all 3 rookies but im pretty certain we usually keep only 8 LB's.

harrison, farrior, woodley, timmons, worilds, gibson, foote, fox, (sylvester on the bubble, but i think w keep 9)

I knew going into this game it would be tough to pick the final spots at: WR, LB, OL and RB (to a lesser extent though)

OL could be the trickiest...you have Starks, Kemo as locks...but i think the other 3 spots are open really. Hartwig vs. Pouncey at C....Pouncey VS. Essex at G...RT, Adams could be a lock also, but not sure. That leaves you with Hills, Foster, Legursky, Urbik, J. Scott...and lets say Essex become a BU again...and then you have C. Scott, does he go IR or what...at this point i might IR him, instead of risking someone taking him off the PS. Thats 10 players for the usual 9 they keep. I think how the BU battles could be... Foster VS. Hills VS. J. Scott, Legursky VS. Urbik VS. Foster, and Essex vs. Foster...i would think based on his versatility and experience alone Essex makes the team (if he doesnt start)...so thats 3 spots for 5 guys. I've never been a huge Foster fan...and only one of Hills and J. Scott make it (if that)...Hills shows a lot in the 1st preseason game i think. And i like Legursrky AND Urbik (but they both play the SAME positions both G's and C)...I just dont know...id like to see both of them make it though, but that would leave 1 spot between Foster, Hills and J. Scott. Decisions,....decisions.

WR i think you have 1-2 spots open between Brown, Battle and Grisham (though i think Grisham goes to the PS again).

LB you pretty much have 8 locks...with Sylvester at the #9...i think this guy is good...and hopefully will make it.

RB you have 2 locks with 1-3 (RB/FB) spots open...Redman will probably make it...and Summers as of now...with Dwyer on the bubble and just depends on if they keep 4 or 5 overall.

How is it overreacting discussing who will take a final few roster spots on the team...after finally getting to see some of these guys play?

Why?? Preseason is very important...its the only time before the season you can see how these players respond going against other teams. I see nothing wrong with these types of discussions.

Do you mean Redman or Summers? Summers didn't get any rushes and caught only 1 pass.

The LB cuts are going to be very interesting.

Aside from last year's starters, Foote and Fox are locks. that makes 6

As for the rookies:
Gibson and Sylvester have shown well, Worilds is sure to make the squad due to his draft status. if they make it, that's 9. That's my guess for how the roster shakes out.

With Andre Frazier on IR for the season, the lack of experienced depth at LB might prompt the team to keep Patrick Bailey on the squad. Depth at OLB is a big issue for the beginning of the year anyway.

Essex is playing for his job. Logan could possibly do everything right and still not make the team. Foote looked unprepared, but he will make it.

Legursky makes the team simply because he is a fullback in goal line sets

I have thought that we might keep 6 WRs also, but if we do, I think I might worry a little about Logan. Let see if Sanders or Brown gets any return opportunities in the next couple of games.

Well I think the RB situation is this: Mendy MeMo are a lock and I think Redman will finally make the team and be used as a short yardage situation back which means Dywer will be sent to PS and we keep Summers for our sadly limited use FB.

WR are: Ward, Wallace, El, Sanders, Brown, and Battle will all make the team and Logan will not make the team because Sanders and Brown both have the speed and ability to return the ball.

While WR may be the biggest competition because of the talent, I'm looking at what's available at the backup saftey positions if anything were to happen to our starters... heaven forbid.

Allen, Mundy... Thorton... maybe Gay. Is there a "starter in waiting" in the bunch?

Will Allen was a starter in the league for a few seasons. I think he could probably handle the duties in a pinch. As far as the future is concerned, Im starting to like Cromartie-Smith. He will most likely be on the practice squad this season but maybe with some grooming he could be a Ryan Clark type saftey for us.

Well I think the RB situation is this: Mendy MeMo are a lock

Memo is not a lock imo. He got 1 carry. He does nothing special except spell Mendenhall.
Memo had had 21 recepetions last year to Mendenhalls 25
Memo is not a goaline back.
Memo doesnt play special teams when hes not returning punts which he isnt going to do.
Memo is not fast
Memo should be cut.
Redman should be the spell back. Summers should be fulltime FB

Your biggest problem (besides the OL) is LACK of quality depth at both safety and CB. You can't expect to go through the entire season as a one-trick pony. If Polamalu goes out (again), your backfield will be exposed (again). Even a good front 7 can't hide a bad back 4, especially if you make the playoffs.

Is anyone thinking that Sweed getting hurt might end up benefiting the Steelers? They get to keep him around potentially while keeping someone else they might not have(or may have cut him) and they get to keep these two players going into next season giving them more potential talent at WR next season. I would just have liked Sweed to live up to his potential this season and not get hurt but I think there might be a bit of a silver lining here.

While I do give your thought some merit, because it's also a concern of mine, I'm gonna have to disagree with you about "a good front 7". If the QB is running for his life because of a good pass rush, I don't think he's gonna take the time, and chance a big hit to look down field and get a bigger play. He's going to dump it short. And that falls more on the LBers... which is part of the front 7. :wink02:

Besides, if the QB is on his back... he's not passing to anyone... except for the next guy to replace him.

What are you smoking? If it wasnt for Moore a couple years ago taking over the RB spot with all the injuries, we'd never won some of the games we did. He is VERY valuable to the RB squad...of course he's going to have less receptions/yards/etc than Mendy, because Mendy is the starter not Moore. You dont have to be fast to be a solid player that Moore is, catching the ball or running, or picking up blitzes. I'm glad you're not the decision maker on this team, cutting Moore could be a disaster (in some cases)...I would NOT feel that safe going into a season with Mendy, Redman, Dwyer and Summers...not saying the last 3 guys arent or cant be any good...they just lack the experience and things that Moore brings to the table which makes him a better all round player.

Guilty as I feel about it, I agree with you.
